I haven’t tuned into Close Up for a very long time but tonight, because Intrepid Journeys is on later. Tonight they’re following the whole John Key/McGehan Close story and 12 year old Aroha Ireland who he invited up to Waitangi. It’s facinating to see the leader of a party that is generally regarded as not championing the cause of those on low incomes or welfare but here he was taking a child from a low income family up to Waitangi. Close Up followed the journey from John picking Aroha up at her McGehan Close home and the drive up to Waitangi where an entourage of media awaited. It must have felt a bit like being a celebrity with all those cameras around and when asked about her journey and what she thought of John Key, “he’s cool” was her response.
Whether or not this is a publicity stunt, it made for fascinating viewing. The only downside was the awkwardness of the studio interviewing where the nerves were obvious and the answers a little brief.
