New Zealand Television Premiere: Chernobyl Heart
Documentary Channel – Sunday 4 March, 9pm

Winner of the 2003 Academy Award for Best Documentary Short.
The world’s worst nuclear accident occurred on April 26 1986. On that day an explosion at the Chernobyl power station in the Ukraine sent 190 tons of highly radioactive uranium and graphite into the atmosphere. A reactor fire burned for ten days and radioactive material was carried by wind and rain into large areas of Belarus, Russia and the Ukraine. Twenty years later, the effects of radiation continue to be seen in high levels of cancer, birth defects and a heart condition that bears the name of the tragedy. This Oscar winning documentary looks at the continuing impact of Chernobyl on the people who live in the area – including children whose lives were forever changed before they were even born.
