Since his arrival in New Zealand, former Coronation Street star Adam Rickitt has been at the centre of a great deal of media attention. The actor, who plays Shortland Street’s newest hunk, Kieran Mitchell, will finally grace viewers’ screens for the first time this week.
An English traveller with a very blurred past, Kieran has found his way to Ferndale. Having played many characters in an extensive career, Rickitt is full of enthusiasm and bustling with excitement at the challenges his latest role presents.
“For me as an actor, Kieran is about as interesting a role as you could have, because he has this black hole in his past,” says Rickitt. The black hole Rickitt refers to will become an integral part of Kieran’s storyline over the next few months as he tries to unravel the mysteries of his past. With this element of mystery, Kieran is certain to bring an extra level of unpredictability to the show every weeknight.
“So often when you do soaps, because of the time constraints and other pressures, you have not simple characters, but very straight forward characters. Kieran comes with a lot of unanswered questions and that’s very exciting from an acting point of view,” says Rickitt. “The main difference between Shortland Street and Coronation Street for me is that my character is far more interesting here. On Coronation Street, my character Nick was brought in as the young Romeo type, so it was all kind of straight forward, whereas this character has so much duplicity to it that it is far more entertaining.”
Rickitt’s enthusiasm for working in New Zealand extends further than just the storylines surrounding his character. The Englishman has been blown away by the welcome he has received in New Zealand and struggles to think of a better country in which to live and work in. “I’m enjoying it unbelievably. I know it sounds clichéd but I’ve never worked in an environment that is as good as here. I don’t think people in this country realise how great they’ve got it because it is such an incredible country. Who wouldn’t want to come to New Zealand?”
Although Rickitt is unable to reveal much about his character, other than that he is shrouded in mystery, he can confirm that his character will be the main focus for more than one of the female Shortland Street characters. One thing is for sure – the arrival of Kieran Mitchell in Ferndale this week will create quite a stir.
