32nd America's Cup: Starting Monday April 16 on ONE!

32nd America’s Cup
From Monday 16 April, 11.05pm

ONE Sport brings you LIVE, exclusive, free-to-air coverage of the ‘32nd America’s Cup’ from Valencia, Spain, with host John McBeth and commentators Peter Lester, Peter Montgomery and Martin Tasker (starting tonight at 11.05 pm on TV ONE). This week the 11 Challengers, including Emirates Team New Zealand, begin the battle for the Louis Vuitton Cup and the opportunity to challenge Alinghi.

It has been seven years since New Zealand became the only country outside of the USA to successfully defend the America’s Cup, and four years since the heartbreaking loss to Alinghi saw the Auld Mug return to Europe for the first time in 152 years. Over the next 12 weeks, Emirates Team New Zealand will fight to bring the Cup back home.
The format of the Louis Vuitton Cup is a series of match races where two teams go head-to-head. With two flights and two race courses, Emirates Team New Zealand will be racing almost every day this week.

The Kiwi team were at the top of the rankings going into Act 13 and the Louis Vuitton Cup, and John McBeth urges New Zealanders to tune in to the event from day one.

“Emirates Team New Zealand has become stronger and stronger as the build-up to the cup has gone on and that makes this a very exciting event. If the ETNZ boat is better than the one they used last year when they won practically everything, then New Zealanders need to make sure they don’t miss much. ETNZ is hot, they’re really hot.”

The skirts came off the boats on April 1, and the countdown to the racing has begun. McBeth says we won’t really know how Team New Zealand stacks up against the competition until the Louis Vuitton Cup begins. “Have they done enough? Have they used their time most efficiently? Nobody knows if you’ve got it right or not until you race.”

ONE Sport will have LIVE coverage of every race day, as well as previews, post-match analysis and daily highlights packages from a purpose-built studio in the heart of Port America’s Cup. ONE Sport’s LIVE coverage will start at around 11.30pm (NZ time) each race day. An hour-long daily highlights package will screen every weekday at 7am (NZT) and in the weekends.

ONE Sport Producer Stephen Coates says TVNZ’s coverage will ensure viewers don’t miss any action – and there will be plenty to watch. “Emirates Team New Zealand are challenging so they race every day, bar a few lay days. In the first round, ETNZ will race twice every day, so if you switch on to TV ONE then you will see New Zealand racing.”

“Our coverage will be live every night. There will be cameras and microphones on every racing boat. There will be cameras on boats that follow the race, on helicopters, and in and around the marks. Couple that with the Virtual Eye graphics, and the viewer will not miss a beat. They will know exactly where one yacht is in relation to the other yacht; whether they’re ahead, whether they’re behind, and what they have to do.”

In addition to comprehensive coverage on TV ONE, the latest ’32nd America’s Cup’ results will be available 24/7 at tvnz.co.nz and via broadband at desktoptv.co.nz.
