Men watch net videos; women watch TV

It seems that men are more into watching online videos while women prefer the TV and remote control

Though inspite of these conclusions highlighted by the article, I don’t reckon there’s that much difference. 97 million women and 91 million men in the US use the Internet. Of the women 66% watch vidoes online compared with 78% of men.

Williamson said that despite the growth of youtube.com, women have not been part of the site’s traffic spike.

“You really do see youtube.com continuing to be more of a male-dominated video site,” Williamson said.

I’m also not sure about some of the over-generalisations made by the researchers. They say:

“Men are more visual than women, who tend to communicate in writing and or in words,” said Debra Aho Williamson, senior analyst with eMarketer and the author of the report.

She said at first she was shocked at the disparity between the sexes because women tend to watch more television. But she argues men are generally ahead of the technology trend.

“Women are more likely to use the internet to get things done, to accomplish tasks, to check something off of a checklist that they need to do,” Williamson said.

“Men are more likely to use the internet to have fun. And a lot of what you see on youtube.com is silly, time-saving kinds of things that maybe women don’t feel they have the time for, or don’t want to have the time for.”

But then some of the over-generalisations are contradicted when the article goes on to say that:

The study suggests women will not lag behind for long. By 2011, 84.6 per cent of women will be internet video viewers, right behind men at 88.8 per cent.

“The gap is going to close pretty quickly as the content becomes available that women are interested in and they become more comfortable with it,” Williamson said.

Today’s generation of teenage girls will also make a difference because they are used to viewing video online as much as their male counterparts, she said.

About the author

I love fiction TV programmes that are fun, entertaining and/or gripping as well as making some comment on society, politics and/or the state of our relationships. I feel a bit sad that fiction TV seems to be being overtaken by other genres in primetime lately on NZ TV. And I want to see more great British drama series on TV. TVNZ, you're losing the plot!!!

Men like things that do things like dogs, chainsaws, cars, and women.
While women like things that dont do anything like d1amond rings, garden gnomes, horoscopes and men.

Heh :) . I always cringe a little when I see things that say (all) men xxxx and (all) women xxxxx. Because I know half the time I don’t fit into the female category. No I don’t like diamond rings, garden gnomes, shoes, shopping, horoscopes or men (at least not sexually/romantically).

But I also am not that keen on dogs, chainsaws – cars are useful but I always preferred motorbikes and bicycles, computers, video recorders, and I do like (some) women… and I prefer things that I can do things with, rather than merely being decorative or for status or appearance.
