The Return of Toni Warner

Poor old Chris. Things haven’t been going so well for Dr Warner since his wife Toni (Laura Hill) took off with their son Harry and Chris’ very own brother, Guy! This week gets off to an even worse start for Chris when he receives word from Tuesday that everyone is alive and safe – but won’t be coming back anytime soon.

There has been a lot of speculation about this whole situation – but here on the official Shortland Street website we can confirm – from Laura Hill herself – that Toni will be back! Here’s what she has to say:
“Shortland Street is a pretty full-on place to work, and having done a couple of plays in Auckland while I’ve been on the show, I know how exhausting it is doing two jobs at once. The opportunity to do a play at the Court Theatre in Christchurch was one I jumped at – I love live theatre, and being out of town, it was a sneaky way of making sure I only had to do one job at a time! Shortland Street is always very understanding about giving people time off to do other projects, as they understand it helps people ‘recharge their batteries’, and they return to work freshly invigorated.
It’s been quite a ride playing Toni for 6 years though. She went from party girl to mum pretty quickly, but it’s been a roller-coaster the whole way, which is what makes it so interesting to play. And of course you do develop an affection for the character, I think you have to, in order to play the part well – if the actor isn’t on the character’s side, who will be? It’s interesting to track the audience’s response to the character too. Lately I’ve been getting a lot of concerned people letting me know that my husband’s cheating on me! I’m not sure how they feel about Toni running off with her brother-in-law, but I have to say it was a lot of fun to play. Craig Parker is an absolute delight to work with, and he and Olivia (Tuesday) brought such a lovely new energy to the Warner clan. Who knows what will happen with them all in the future? No, I mean it, who knows? I don’t… but Toni will be back, someday, somehow…!”
