Relieved caver rescued at 1:00am
After the biggest rescue the area has ever seen, injured caver Dr. Michael Brewer was pulled from a Takaka caving system at about 1:00am this morning. He was injured around 5:00pm on Saturday when he was hit by falling rocks, three kilometres underground. Dr. Brewer’s wife Sarah and her two teenage daughters were there to see him when he came out. Watch the incredible footage from inside the cave of the last stage of the rescue and find out the first thing he said to his wife when he came out.

One year paid leave for mothers?
The Families Commission says mothers should have up to one year paid leave and one month for fathers, and they should be paid more too. The report is being welcomed by the government but business groups say it could make surviving in a tight labour market even harder for employers.

Sports stars, shearers, writers and judges honoured today
Jonah Lomu was officially made a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit at a ceremony in Wellington today. Lomu, who was named on this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours List, was recognised for services to rugby. Find out who else was honoured on 3 News tonight.
