A young doctor encounters romance and deals with his past when he returns to his hometown during the holidays.
Young medical student Nathan (Neil Patrick Harris) is still grieving for his mother, and decides to quit his surgical residency as he can’t cope with the fact that some patients die. Despite his father protests, Nathan returns home to work at the family-owned garage – the only operating he’s going to do is on cars and engine blocks. Things change after college student Megan’s (Rebecca Gayheart) car breaks down near the garage and Nathan helps repair it. Nathan is smitten and volunteers to help children at an after-school playground where Megan happens to work. He takes a special interest in Charlie, a sick boy, who has also lost his mother. While Megan encourages Nathan to go back to medical school, he resists, still afraid of having to face loss of life. But when Charlie’s health deteriorates, and Megan herself develops a problem, Nathan realises he must confront his fears to avoid losing another important person. A miracle is his for the asking.
