Opera Performance: George Frideric Handel: Serse
Arts Channel – Monday 28 January, 8.00pm
EuroArts presents Serse, one of Handel’s most intriguing operas, in a staging for the Dresden Music Festival. Rediscovered at the 1924 Göttingen Handel Festival, the work soon became one of the composer’s most popular operas, surpassed only by Giulio Cesare. Its popularity might be partly due to the most famous opera aria by Handel, Ombra mai fu. However, recordings of the complete opera are rare and this one from the opulent Semperoper in Dresden combines a visually strong staging with the expertise of an excellent team of instrumentalists and singers, all of them well versed in Baroque performance practice. With a cast like this, this production of Serse not only became one of the highlights of the festival, but also will continue to fascinate TV audiences alike.
