Do you think it's time for more New Zealand versions of international talent shows?

We’ve had four seasons of Dancing with the Stars, three seasons of NZ Idol and So You Think You Can Dance.

Do you think it’s time for more local versions of international talent shows?

The biggest shows which we haven’t seen in New Zealand would be The X Factor and New Zealand’s Got Talent.

The X Factor has seen stars such as Leona Lewis and Shayne Ward rise to fame in the UK. Already in 11 countries – including Australia – the show is expanding into 5 more countries in 2008. The show hasn’t screened in NZ.

Think Idol but there’s three categories: vocal groups (including duos), solo singers ages 14-24 and solo singers aged 25+.

UK judges have been Simon Cowell, Sharon Osbourne, Louis Walsh, Dannii Minogue, Paula Abdul and Brian Friedman. Australian judges have been Mark Holden, Kate Ceberano and John Reid.

New Zealand’s Got Talent would follow the international format which began in the US and went to the UK. The US and UK shows air on Prime TV.

Auditions are performed in front of a live studio audience. Judges press a buzzer when they have seen enough. When all three judges have pressed the button, the auditionee must stop. Judges decide who goes through to the next round.

Paul Potts rose to fame after winning in the UK’s first season. Bianca Ryan, an 11 year old singer won the first season in the US.

Subsequent seasons will air this year in both countries.

Judges include: Simon Cowell, Sharon Osbourne and David Hasselhoff.

If the shows came to New Zealand, do you think they would do well?

Which channel would you want it on? Who would you like to make it? Who would you like to host? Who would you want to judge?

I read somewhere that PRIME is beginning to plan a New Zealand version of ‘Talent’

  • Rachel

Makes sense as they own the rights to the other shows. What do you think of the idea?

  • katipo

Don’t even think about it!!!! The NZ version of Idol was bad enough!

In any case making a show called New Zealand’s Got Talent would be hypocritical because NZ Idol proved we don’t!

  • regan

Actually, NZ Idol just proved two things. That as a country we just don’t get “pop”. And secondly, and probably more importantly, that despite have 18 weeks of prime time television promotion, the record company couldn’t make it work for them.

hae i fnk we nz hav experience past difficulties but wi hav many undiscoverd talent. its tym we discoverd we need to giv dis a try and put our talent out dea…wi need more faith, for new zealand

I don’t know if this is old news but I saw an audition notice for Stars in their eyes at a community centre two weeks ago. It said the host was Simon Barnett. Don’t know what network I just glanced it as I walked through.

  • Rachel

Thanks – yeah there was a post about it last year here but good to know it’s still in progress.

  • monreve

i reckon they will go for stables and other randoms as judges – even bring back paul ellice?

  • Rogue

I cant see X-Factor being produced here until they screen an overseas version first… *Hint Hint* lol

I think there should be a Kids New Zealand Exactly the same as New Zealand Idol But for kids Under 15 or 14 to 8 Who should beable to have a shot at being a singer ive been on every web site and alot of kids want to be involved with singing so i think that they should have a chance

It happened ten years ago in the guise of McDonald’s Young Entertainers. It could work again…

I Think its a great idea! Gives ppl a good oportunity and experience.. And i think that Prome T.V would b the perfect chanel to have it on..!!

  • Tara

    Sorry i ment *Prime T.V

  • nanisnap

FOX in America tried this with the Idol spin off American Juniors a few years back, although it got a lot of crap for making the kids into losers and making them cry. Plus the aim was to make a pop group so I guess an updated, refocussed show could work.

  • Tui

Another idol would be good. Then we could have IdolBlog again! 😀

  • Rachel

SPP are doing “New Zealand’s Got Talent” so not much chance of that happening this year.

  • nanisnap

NZ’s Got Talent should be interesting, although I don’t see it going past one season. NZ is just not big enough to support talent shows like this. It’s quite simple: being a smaller country we don’t have as much talent as the US or UK.

    Case in point: NZ Idol.

We have an international student who would love to be part of this – would she be able to enter or is it just for New Zealanders. My daughter also is going to enter and for her it would be for experience. She loves to sing so she said “why not”. Good luck to all who enter.

  • MrCynical

No, they should focus on scripted, ACTUAL, enteratainment insteaad of crapping out formula driven dreary reality tv

  • Hey!
    New Zealand’s Got TALENT.
Let’s Promote & Market the event the right way.
