Let the Music Play: The Barry White Story - Monday 10 March at 8:30pm on TV6

Let the Music Play: The Barry White Story is a film biography which tells the life story of this great music man, and one of popular culture’s most enduring icons. Let the Music Play screens Monday 10 March at 8:30pm on TVNZ Showcase on TVNZ 6.

This film tells the story of how a poor boy from the wrong side of the tracks broke away from potential trouble, to go on to success and fame.
As a child, Barry started playing drums, sang bass, and wrote songs. Spellbound by the magic of the recording studio, Barry learnt his craft as engineer, producer and all-round musician. He also went out on the road, experiencing first-hand the whites-only/coloured-only segregation of the American South that so many black American musicians endured.

The story traces Barry’s musical development, working on a host of soul classics and lesser-known gems that never made it to the top of the charts. Going back into the studio, with exclusive access to some of Barry’s early recordings, Let The Music Play dissects and examines these tracks, under the guidance of Barry’s friend and producer Jack Perry.

The many interviewees in this doco include Glodean, Barry’s longtime muse, wife and performing partner; Smokey Robinson; and songwriters Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff.

Performances include: I’m Gonna Love You Just A Little Bit More Baby, Can’t Get Enough Of Your Love Babe, You My First, My Last, My Everything, Never Never Gonna Give You Up, You See The Trouble With Me, Let The Music Play, It’s Ecstasy When You Lay Down Next To Me, Sho’ Your Right, Practice What You Preach, Under the Influence of Love (Love Unlimited), and Love’s Theme (The Love Unlimited Orchestra).

Let the Music Play: the Barry White Story is a celebration of the life and career of a brilliant musician and man, told by his friends, associates and family.
