Jaime’s (Michelle Ryan) much-needed vacation with her sister Becca (Lucy Kate Hale) at a spa resort is disrupted when she is pulled into a deadly cat and mouse game with another hotel guest on Bionic Woman, screening Sunday, March 23rd at 9:15pm on 3.

Today’s version of Bionic Woman, as much as the original series back in the `70s, relies quite heavily on the impact of its lead actress.

In the first Bionic Woman, the series actually came about as a result of audience response to Lindsay Wagner’s portrayal of Jamie Sommers in a handful of episodes of its parent show, The Six Million Dollar Man.

In the modern retelling of the series, Michelle Ryan has taken the cudgels from Wagner, playing Jaime Sommers as a mechanically enhanced bartender.

The basics may be the same – woman gets state-of-the-art body parts after a near-death accident – but this year’s model, adds darkness and cuts the camp of its popular 1970s predecessor.

“When I first heard Bionic Woman, I thought, ‘There’s no way. Not interested. Forget it,’” Miguel Ferrer, who plays the head of a secret organisation that saves Jaime Sommers, recently told USA Today.

“They said, ‘Hold on. It’s dark and it’s nasty and people die. And it’s not what you think it is.’ And sure enough, it’s not what I thought it was,” he added.

Ferrer credits the behind-the-scenes talent, led by executive producer David Eick, who also remade the 70s classic Battlestar Galactica.

“They took that cheesy franchise and put a serious look on it, and I think that’s what’s happened with Bionic Woman.”

However Michelle Ryan has her own theory on why the new and improved Bionic Woman works in the 21st century.

“She is a strong, feisty female character,” Ryan told Entertainment Weekly about her onscreen persona.

“She has a vulnerability to her. She’s very warm and compassionate. I think she has high morals. She always questions things.”
