TV3 first to launch HD 5.1 surround sound

TV3 will be the first broadcaster in New Zealand to launch HD 5.1 surround sound, with the new service being available to viewers from this Sunday, June 22, during the screening of the top-rating drama series NCIS.

The service will give viewers who have installed Freeview|HDTM an enriched, theatre quality sound reproduction.

Shows featuring the new surround sound will include NCIS, Bones, Dexter and CSI:NY, with CSI: Miami and Medium to be available soon.

Programmes with surround sound will be identified on the TV3 website, www.tv3.co.nz and Freeview|HDTM Electronic Programme Guide by a 5.1 surround sound indicator.

John Allen, TV3’s Director of Technology says the introduction of 5.1 surround sound on TV3′s Freeview|HDTM service completes the company’s implementation of the first HDTV service in New Zealand.

“It will add considerably to the entertainment experience of a growing number of viewers who have installed home theatre systems,” he comments. “TV3 can now provide HD viewers with the most advanced viewing and sound package in the country.”

TV3 seems to be pretty quick on adopting new technology.

    Where are you TVNZ?

TVNZ were the first to announce its HD service (in September last year). Programming will start with the Olympics on TV One in 720p. And they said that 5.1 Surround Sound will be available from the get-go.

TV3 have been HD for a while now.
If TVNZ announced it last September then that means it’s taken almost an entire year to see it in action for them – the Olympics start in August don’t they?

Anouncing things is a lot different to actually doing them, sounds a lot like politics lol.

I think the 5.1 on TV3 is great, but when changing channels between all the other shows on MySkyHDi (or Freeview HD) TV3 has a very quiet volume for non 5.1 supported TV shows. Bit of a pain to keep adjusting the amp all the time. I guess we’ll just have to wait until everyone supports 5.1 and shows are correctly recorded in this newer format.
