This is your life Scott Dixon

What do you think of the choice of tonight’s This is your life youngest ever (and first Australian) recipient: motor racing driver Scott Dixon?

Are you happy that yet another sportsperson has been honored?

I’m really disappointed that it’s another sportsperson. Where are the inventors, scientists, businessmen and academics etc?

Scott Dixon has had amazing achievements, but he is so young and it seems odd to say “This is your life” when he has so much ahead of him.

I could understand Jonah Lomu being honored on the show since his career as a rugby player was over but Dixon hasn’t retired yet.

But Dixon has achieved in the highest level he can.

Rachel, there are no inventors, scientists, businessmen or academics from NZ who have ever made it onto the world stage to the equivalent as Scott Dixon has in his sport.

The only reson there are so many sportspeople is that they are the only people in NZ who are high achievers on the world stage.

There is a possibility that Scott could go on to win more Indy Series, even go to F1. No way Gavin J has he achieved the highest level.

Why not a female this time round….

    Boring…

maybe they think they’ll get him while he’s still alive…

I think he is probably deserving of the honour, but not at this stage. I think there are plenty of talented Kiwi’s out there who probably deserve the honour more, and who have done more than just won a sporting championship, e.g. Sir Peter Blake was given the honour, and he was deserving because he was not just a leading sailor, he also believed in a cause and did more than just sail. Perhaps we should be looking towards our past leaders. Sir Geoffrey Palmer has had an esteemed political career and has gone on to become head of the Law Commission, but if he was on the show, I can imagine ratings would be low and the show wouldn’t be as exciting as a sports person. Unfortunately because our state broadcaster has that commercial commitment, they will always be picking those that will retain the most viewers.

he is so young he should be done in 2030

Scott deserved it. If not Dixon, then who else? That’s the question you need to ask yourself. Like has been said by others; in the field of Business, the Sciences and the like, New Zealanders haven’t exactly (at least in recent times) performed at the same equivalent level as the likes of Scott Dixon in the field of sports.

The only people that perhaps come close to recieving this honour are maybe: Peter Jackson? (but even he still has a lot left to offer in his field). There isn’t a lot of other people coming to mind at the moment.

As far as NZ women are concerned, the Evers-Swindell’s still have another Olympic games to look forward to and I don’t know if childrens’ book authors Lynley Dodd or Margaret Mahy’s efforts are enough to make a claim for such recognition either.

I liked this one – a lot. I’ve always found This is Your Life kinda sad – because the person is past their prime and they have done their dash.

But This is Your Life Scott Dixon was like a huge celebration for what he has just achieved – and that is the aspect that I liked.

The show was saying congratulations! These are the people that helped you along the way – we want to celebrate this moment with you……

eh? since when was Scott Dixon Australian?

  • Rachel

Br3nda – that is how he was introduced on the show, as he was born there.

Dumb, dumb, dumb! I think that was the most appalling piece of television I have watched in a long time. Paul Henry’s commentary was pathetic – more like a brain haemorage than brain surgery. Here was a golden opportunity to show New Zealanders what a hero Scott Dixon is but Henry and This is Your Life blew it. Mostly we heard about Scott’s drinking exploits and youthful adventures breaking the law in cars. I suspect that because of Scott’s young age, there was not a lot of material available about him but surely they could have found something more meaningful. I gave up watching after the introduction of his wife.

Wake up television and think about what sort of message you want to send your audience. I’m sure Scott Dixon won’t want people to think he has a drinking problem.

  • lawrence

    Totally agree Vivienne.

Having just read a book about Scott Dixon, there were so many more positive things they could have talked about from his racing career. And as for having Marc Ellis on it being a juvenile twat yet again. Give us a break.
