Top Town returning to TV

We’ve seen the return of the game shows. TV3 have announced they’re bringing back Telethon. And now, TVNZ are bringing back Top Town!

The iconic kiwi show which screened from 1976 to 1990 is returning in December where 15 towns will compete for the Top Town trophy and the right to be called “New Zealand’s Top Town”.

The last town that won the competition in 1990, Greymouth, has already confirmed they will be fielding a team to defend their title.

Each competing town will have a team that consists of 12 players – six male and six female – cheer squads, supporters and mascots.

The entire competition will be held over 8 days in Christchurch in early December. I wonder if this means that the event will be live.

I wonder how many towns that competed in the original series will now be inelligable, due to population growth making them cities in the meantime?
As long as it keeps the original sort of style and doesn’t end up being some crass Wipeout / MXC ripoff, it should be good.

Oh I heard about this a few weeks ago. Should be good!

  • someone

That is a crap show, lets hope the two major parties dont attend & maybe TV3 will scrap the show. what do thank Helen & John?

  • Aileen

Should be good is right.. Good To Miss in other words…more Kiwi ****

    xactly Aileen,
I would prefer to watch “Krypton factor” I think it was called, this is were they went through a army exercise course, then they had to do some brain teaser puzzles, then some questions.

Top Town is just like watching a church crowd having fun on a saturday picnic.

I think Tamati Coffey would be a perfect host.

I remember Krypton Factor. It was kind of a mix of boffin and beefcake! That and Mastermind, which was purely a quiz, but focused on the contestant’s “special subject” for one round and general knowledge for the other. That got boring real fast though when their special subject was “The lovelife of sub-atomic particles” or the like. Top town will inevetibley be some of the towns’ top rugby /netball jocks & jockettes and a local “identity” / twit like their horribly unfit breakfast radio host, or mascot like “Bertie” from Napier. Ergh!

You guys are so negative! I think it is great – such an iconic Kiwi show and I remember watching it as a kid and being so excited when my local town was on. Lighten up everyone and try and enjoy a show that actually celebrates New Zealand and our sense of fun and competitiveness. It is a rare thing on our screens to see small town NZ represented too and will be a sure hit.

We are are not so negative, realistic would be the word,
and what is wrong with watching a church crowd having fun on a saturday picnic.

Why did TVNZ drop top town but had In the bag running for many years? maybe it was better entertainment.

Does the top town get a big top town statute for the center of the town to display complete with a plaque “we were TV’s top town 2008″?
