In an unlikely turn of events, South Pacific Pictures will be competing against itself at 7:00pm on Friday night as the season finale of Shortland Street on TV2 goes up against an Outrageous Fortune Christmas special on TV3′s Campbell Live.
Shortland Street has had a fantastic year. It was only twelve months ago that we finally learned the Joey Henderson was the infamous Ferndale Strangler and his demise resulted in boosted ratings for the prime time soap. New characters, plots and villains have continued to sustain the interest and this week it culminates in the much anticipated Christmas cliffhanger.
Outrageous Fortune started off a little slow but gathered momentum. The end result was another sensational series that once again proved that TV3′s investment in local drama was a very smart idea.
For the first time, in what must a little surreal, the two shows will compete for ratings in the same time slot. It is expected that Shortland Street will easily win the ratings game on the night but there should definitely be a lift for Campbell Live as well as a good number of people recording the latter to watch later.
Shortland Street returns in January after a break for the holidays while the next season of Outrageous Fortune isn’t expected back on the small screen until the middle of 2009.
