Martian Robots

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC – Saturday January 17, 2009 at 9:30pm

When they landed on the red planet in January 2004, the Mars rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, were expected to last a few months. Four years later they’re still at work. They’ve trekked miles across hostile plains, climbed mountains, been stuck in sand dunes, ventured in and out of deep craters, survived dust storms and mechanical failures. They’ve exceeded all expectations, but age is catching up with Spirit and Opportunity. This is their adventure on Mars and the as yet unknown story of how the mission finally comes to an end.
