Cal Has To Determine If a Gang Leader is Lying on Lie To Me

8:30pm – Tuesday, June 30 on TV 3

3’s new series about the science of lying continues this week when Cal and Torres interrogate an imprisoned gang leader who claims to be rehabilitated. Lie to Me screens on Tuesday, June 30th at 8:30pm on 3.

Starring legendary Hollywood actor Tim Roth, Lie to Me focuses on deception experts Dr. Cal Lightman (Roth) and Ria Torres (Brendan Hines) who run a private agency that’s contracted by law enforcement corporations and private individuals when they’ve hit a roadblock in their search for the truth.

The science of deception detection featured in the series is based on the work of Dr. Paul Ekman who is the world’s leading deception expert.

Roth says Dr. Ekman’s techniques are some of the most reliable in determining whether someone is lying, however, according to the actor, this ability is often a blessing in disguise.

“I try to take absolutely none of it home with me,” Roth reveals to Zap2It. “I make a very strong attempt not to get to know too much of the science and not to practice it at home or any of that stuff because the real guy, Paul, he can’t switch it off.”

“He can’t unlearn it. He knows so much about this stuff that he can see, in everybody, what they’re maybe thinking. He watches their bodies betray them. I don’t really want to do that.”

Even though Roth tries not to take what he’s learnt on set home, the actor is quick to point out that his profession as an actor could very well be regarded as a “dishonest” one.

“All of acting is lying. It’s all deception,” he says. “Actors quite often get a hold of Paul’s training DVD’s and his Web site training stuff and also his books and use them.”

“So, I’m always lying. That’s what actors do, so you never stop lying. It’s just how good you are at it, I suppose.”

As for Roth’s character, this week the doctor has to determine if a gang leader is lying or whether he truly has been rehabilitated and should be freed to help fight inner-city violence. Lie to Me screens on Tuesday, June 30th at 8:30pm on 3.
