There’s a new face at Section D: Smouldering heart-throb Richard Armitage joins the Grid as MI5 officer Lucas North, in season seven of the BAFTA-winning, high-suspense spy drama Spooks starting tonight at 9.30pm on TV ONE.
The new season continues with more topical stories of deadly terrorists; undercover operations and double-agents, while there’s an added danger – a deepening schism with Russia raising new Cold War tensions.
Having spent the past eight years in a Russian prison, Lucas North (Armitage, The Vicar Of Dibley) is welcomed by MI5 supremo and old friend Harry Pearce (Peter Firth), who was instrumental in finally securing his release. North is keen to get back to work straightaway, and with Section D’s current priority operation having a strong Russian connection, he could well prove invaluable. But, after eight years with only a high-ranking Russian spymaster for company, can his loyalty really be taken for granted?
Armitage says joining Spooks was a fantastic opportunity: “I’m particularly pleased to be playing the hero for a change! Lucas North is certainly a nicer piece of work than Guy of Gisborne [his character in Robin Hood], although he does have a dark side too. Plus, I’ll be able to get out of wearing head-to-toe leather for this role, unless of course I didn’t read the small print…”
Producer Katie Swinden adds: “Richard is a fantastic addition to the Spooks team. He has that dark and brooding quality which makes him perfect for the role of Lucas North. Lucas’s experiences in Russia have helped make him a hardened spy, but the difficulties he faces in coming home to the life he left behind and to the Russian ex-wife he still loves will also be a feature of this series. I am convinced that this complex and intriguing character will be a hit with viewers.”
Episode one sees an al Qaeda cell kidnap a British soldier and demand that Remembrance Sunday be cancelled as it is an affront to all dead Muslim soldiers. MI5 hunts the cell, but when the team secures the release of former MI5 officer Lucas North in a secret spy swap, they realise al Qaeda has a new sponsor – the emerging superpower Russia – and there’s a bomb.
Spooks Series 7, has just been nominated for a Best Series Bafta which is unprecedented for a show in its seventh series.
