Commentary:
Both bulletins had thorough video footage of the earthquake aftermath and rescue efforts, including comment from Hillary Clinton and Helen Clark. Both played the clip I saw on YouTube only hours after the earthquake, of a woman thinking the world was ending. ONE News used some clips tonight from CNN, while 3 News used some clips from CBS. Both put the death toll unknown but thought to be as many as 100,000. Both covered the same NZ connections to the earthquake – a family and a musician’s mother – 3 News wrapped these all into one story while ONE had them as separate items.
The aid efforts information was more detailed on 3 News – although they did use the French flag accidentally for Spain!
Both gave some information about the caused of the quake and some recent Haitian history.
Both news bulletins seemed pretty good to me tonight and I will award this one as a tie. I personally tended to like the way 3 News presented it a bit more – the overview at the start was useful and the footage seemed a bit more concise (but still covering the same) than ONE News – perhaps because they didn’t spend so long with the musician speculating about his mother in Haiti?
Verdict: Tie
What did you think of the news bulletins tonight?
