MediaWorks to support Earth Hour 2010

MediaWorks is again proudly lending support to Earth Hour, and encouraging Kiwis to get in behind this worldwide initiative to combat global warming.

As the first time zone in the world to celebrate Earth Hour, New Zealanders are urged to switch off the lights on Saturday, March 27 between 8.30pm and 9.30pm and be the first in the world to show commitment to fighting climate change.

Sunrise is supporting the initiative with weather presenter Josh Heslop coming to viewers LIVE at Ten Pin Takapuna, tomorrow morning (March 26) doing Glow in the Dark Ten Pin Bowling to promote Earth Hour.

3 News’ Samantha Hayes will be previewing what Earth Hour is, who’s involved and why.

TV3’s coverage continues on Sunday when 3 News will bring viewers imagery from New Zealand iconic landmarks such as the Sky Tower, The Beehive and the Octagon as well showing us what happened internationally in places including The Golden Gate Bridge, the Empire State Building, Table Mountain in Cape Town and the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, in Dubai when they switched their lights off.

MORE FM is also playing their part in supporting Earth Hour with a special acoustic show from 8pm hosted by Jesse Mulligan and guest star Anika Moa who’ll have the official NZ countdown to the switch off.

MORE FM also are hosting activity all over the country that Kiwis can get involved in with Aucklanders able to enjoy a full acoustic set with some great Kiwi acts including Mel Parson and Chris Cope at Britomart from 7.30pm – 10pm, hosted by Late Night LOVE host, Lee Plummer.

MORE FM are also supporting candle lit dinners and events throughout the country, including The Longest Potluck dinner in Rotorua, and a staged event in Dunedin’s Octagon, with the support of local restaurants who will all be serving dinner by candlelight. I wonder if there will be coverage of the power hour as well.

  • Rachel

I thought this was going to say they were switching off for an hour…

Earth Hour is a waste of time. What’s the point?

Earth Hour is a waste of time. What’s the point? you ask

save power for one hour, waste it for 8759 hours, until next year. just to let you know – I dont poke my cloths on a cloths dry on a hot (or a runny day for that matter) could this be the reason why rain is not coming down to Auckland this year? and it is costing some family’s $200 for a water top up!

Great business idea by Mediaworks, “Everyone please turn off your televisions and radios for at least an hour on Saturday night!”

Why not just switch off the transmitters altogether for an hour if they’re that committed to this flawed concept?  I hope advertisers are getting cut-price rates for that timeslot.

I think mediaworks only want people to turn off there lights, aswell as watch there news coverage, listen to more fm, attend more fm sponsored events and just whatever your doing for earth hour include mediaworks  in it (So no TVNZ or TRN) so they can feel better about themselves.

So really you won’t be saving that much power after all

  • someone

Just think while you people are working out whether to turn off the TV set or the transmitters tonight,,,, I will still be sticking my cloths on the cloths line through the rest of the year especially hot summer days, you can not beat that lovely smell of cloths that come off the cloths line.

I say screw the power switch off idea at 2030 hours because I dont waste power after the 2130 hours times up mark!!

VERY INTERESTING how West coast normally waste 13% power on Saturday night was as Northland does not waste any power.

We should saving power the whole weekend next month, and see how keen people are on this save the earth hype.

  • Simon Slade

They should try Earth Day and see how much that saves :)

I think we should be coming up with real ideas to protect the environment rather than silly gimmicks.

Having recycling plants in every community and growing hemp to make paper instead of cutting down trees.
