Missing Pieces Series Finale

8:00pm – Tuesday, March 30 on TV 3

This week’s Missing Pieces series finale promises to be another emotional journey for two people trying to reunite with the past they thought they left behind. Missing Pieces concludes its second season on Tuesday, March 30th at 8pm on 3.

“The terrible thing we have found as we have done Missing Pieces is that too often family members go without seeing each other simply because of miscommunication,” says Missing Pieces producer David Lomas when asked about what he has learned over the series’ two seasons.

Lomas continues, saying this week’s instalment is a prime example of that, referring to the story of Susan, who last saw her father when she was just two-years-old.

“Susan Mills has always wanted to catch up with her father. Her Dad, Rod Mills has always wanted to be connected with his daughter,’ he says. “But a misunderstanding many years ago left Rod believing he had no place in his daughter’s life and Susan believing her father did not care about her.”

Following the search for Susan’s long-lost father, Missing Pieces meets Pat, a man who years ago made a decision he will forever regret but is now trying to make it right as he searches for his children.

“Pat is an alcoholic who has not touched alcohol for more than 30 years,” Lomas explains. “He admitted he had done a lot of bad things and just wants to put things right.”

“His plea is quite amazing,” Lomas continues. “He stands in the busy Britomart train station and says straight to the camera that he is an alcoholic and he wants to put things right with his family.”

Its moments like these that have touched the hearts of so many New Zealanders, and Lomas hopes they have also helped people realise they are not alone in their search for their loved ones.

“It is just staggering how many people have lost contact with loved ones, many just through silly misunderstanding,” he says.

“A lot of people are too scared to try to find their relatives,” he continues. “They are worried they will be rejected. One of the first questions they ask me when I tell them we have found their father/mother/son/daughter is ‘do they want to see me?’ – it is only then they really cry, real tears of relief that they have not been forgotten.”

But will Susan and Pat be as lucky? Find out when Missing Pieces concludes its second season on Tuesday, March 30th at 8pm on 3.
