Jay Laga'aia on Home And Away

5:30pm – Monday, April 5 on TV 3

Since his recent arrival in Summer Bay, Elijah (Jay Laga’aia) has already made waves with some of the locals, however with none more so then with Leah (Ada Nicodemou), who this week struggles with her feelings for the latest Summer Bay blow-in. Home and Away screens Weekdays at 5:30pm on 3.

Born in New Zealand and raised in South Auckland, Laga’aia recently spoke to Home and Away Central, revealing some interesting facts about his new character.

“My mates have been making a few jokes that the only reason I got the gig was because they needed someone with a full licence who can drive them around,” Laga’aia joked.

“No, look it’s been a lot of fun, everyone works so hard on this show but I’m certainly enjoying myself.”

Laga’aia, who plays Brazilian jujitsu instructor and Anglican minister Elijah Johnson, says he didn’t have to work too hard to secure the role, as it was pretty much written especially for him.

“I didn’t audition, it was an offer,” he explained. “Apparently, when they were writing the character they kept saying, ‘He’s a bit of this and a bit of that; he’s a bit like Jay Laga’aia’.”

“I’m not sure exactly what that means: a bit Ernie Dingo, a bit Kamahl? A little bit country, a little bit rock ‘n’ roll? Then they thought they might as well ask me what I was doing and I said, `Yes!'”

The role sees the actor work closely with Home and Away beauty Ada Nicodemou, who Laga’aia says is always able to put a smile on his face. “She’s refreshing,” he explains.

“As soon as we cut she’s back to laughing and having fun. She’s very much a girl from Menai – she’s never forgotten that and is a great lady who’s so unaffected by all this.”

But how will Nicodemou’s Leah deal with her feelings for Laga’aia’s Elijah? Find out when Home and Away continues on Monday, April 5th at 5:30pm on 3.
