New digital music channel to launch May 1: C42

MediaWorks TV has confirmed that it will launch an alternative digital music channel C42 on May 1st to play exclusively on Channel 9 of the Freeview platform.

C42 will be launched on May 1st, to celebrate the start of NZ Music Month and will offer New Zealand music considerable representation with a commitment to up to 30 per cent local content.

C42 will feature back to back alternative music videos, without hosts.

MediaWorks TV Network Executive, Andrew Szusterman says: “We’re happy to be able to offer a true free-to-air 24-hour nationwide music television service that will play everything from ‘The Clash’ through to ‘The Clean’, while also highlighting more current  talent like ‘Vampire Weekend’ and our own ‘The Naked and Famous’.

With approximately 30 per cent of the playlist dedicated to NZ music, it seems only proper that we start May 1st, the launch of NZ Music Month.”

An arrangement between MediaWorks and PPNZ will ensure videos and artists represented by IMNZ (the New Zealand trade body for independent record labels and distributors) represent a larger portion of the playlist.

C42 is a brand extension of C4 which has extended beyond its music channel origins to become a general youth entertainment channel.

C42 goes LIVE to air exclusively on Freeview Channel 9 (6am) on May 1st, 2010.

C42 joins the Freeview platform as the second exclusive channel for MediaWorks, after the launch of TV3 plus 1 in March 2009.

The Freeview platform will have TV3, C4, TV3 plus 1, C42 and George FM from the MediaWorks’ stable.

Wait C4 is a general youth entertainment channel………… I thought it was a music channel that plays a few hours of actual tv shows a night except saturday where all but half an hour is music. But C42 will be cheap which is why it is there.

My thoughts exactly reece_555. So it seems all Mediaworks can offer are channels playing endless loops of music videos no one wants to watch, while TVNZ can only offer channels playing reruns of TV shows dating back to the ice age…exciting…

i think we’re very lucky to see a new channel from media works at the moment no matter what format it is. whilst i would prefer just about anything other than a music channel i’ll take what i can get.

I hope it is like (63 i think its called on skytv) playing music for everybodys tastes not just the youth of today who listen to rubbish like lady gaga like we get on C4.

I wouldnt say nobody watches music tv, its good for background music.

Oops i should have read the whole story

    This is an interesting statement

C42 will feature back to back alternative music videos, without hosts.

Sadly costs probably mean they won’t be using this to bring in some of the international music content. I’d love to see some of the content from 4music in the UK appear over here, as well as FTA showings of Live at Abbey Road and Later with Jools Holland.

Anyway given the current climate I’m pleased to see them launch anything, and i’m wondering if they are pitching for slot “42” on Sky at a later date with this name.

  • I think it’s good for Freeview viewers. No more crappy reality TV shows & just music.
