SKY TV is greeedy

Sky now has taken the Tennis off Free to Air Television. We can’t watch anything apart from motor racing

I feel this is a disgrace. Why should one organisation have a monopoly.

I don’t think this has been confirmed as yet?

Also, if you want to watch sport in this country, you have to pay a Sky fee. Some people can’t afford it and I feel sorry for them, but it’s the realities of commercialism and the dollar. Besides, Sky provides much better coverage of sport than a FTA channel could hope to anyway.

When watching the tennis this year I’ve had the feeling that TVNZ just don’t seem to care and put as much effort into the broadcast as much anymore, as if they’ve all but given up on sport.

Oh good, you mean next year we dont have to spend money on DVD’s because there will be something worth watching on TV1 during the holidays,

Never mind with TV1 having a good program this will uplift all the other stations with good shows worth watching.

Well Im actually glad that skytv has the tennis rights, Because in the last couple of weeks when TVNZ was showing the tennis they kept cutting off the end matches to show the 6pm news. I noticed it in about six different tennis matches. You would sit down to watch a game of tennis but often you did not get to see the end of it due to the 6pm news. In my opinion sports and tvnz do not mix.

Nice that you can afford a Sky sports package.  And the poor people can eat cake?

So is someone saying Sky Sports have rights to the ASB Classic & Heineken Open for 2011???

I am aware of them having rights to coverage of the Sydney Medibank, Brisbane International and Australian Open/Other grand slams, but was not aware of them having any connection to the ASB Classic and Heineken Open.

This seems to be the last kill they have done on TVNZ. They now have the rugby, cricket, basketball, recently finished off their run with the netball (now adding international netball to their ANZ Championships rights) and now tennis, not to mention Rugby League which has been traditional with Sky.

It’s sad, as I felt it was a tradition to watch the tennis with the TVNZ team each and every year. Sad, but lets hope the coverage can be just as good. Toni Street & Rod Cheeseman did a wonderful job presenting too.

In 10 years time will Sky be about. Technology is changing so fast  will people buy  it direct from the Sports them selves or their agents. I feel sky can ruin sport. Cricket has gone backwards since sky took it over. When Hadlee etc was on  TV1,  kids were playing cricket in the parks etc. Have not seen a kid playing cricket anywhere. Not even on the beach. May be families cant afford Sky. A few cricketers have made a fortune but the game is struggling. Sports betting seems to be the only way to drum up interest which is pathetic.

hate to say it, but once TV3′s contract with the V8 Supercars expires in a couple of years time (I think next year will be the last one) you will find Sky waltzing in and paying ridiculous amounts of money for the rights to broadcast it and that will mean one of the last big sports events will move to pay TV. And as a family man trying to live off one income so my wife can be at home with the kids instead of sending them to childcare, yes, you are right bandit, I can’t afford Sky. However, despite the fact that I miss out on live sport I wouldn’t be keen on paying for Sky if I could afford it as I feel that their programming is crap, particularly for sport!! I mean, why play repeats of 6 month old rugby games when there has been football played? I think we are poorly served by Sky TV for sports. They have no competition for bidding really and they are becoming fat and lazy. And by the way Sky subscription holders, do you feel cheated when you turn on your paid for Sky and see ads? Sounds like Sky are trying to have the best of both worlds and are getting a bit too greedy. No wonder free to air TV can’t compete.

The Henin-Kuznetsova game on Jan 21 was shown “live” on Sky Sport 2 at 7pm, despite the result already haing been published. Rang them up to complain, and they just insisted that i was wrong and it was live. How do I go about making a complaint/taking it further? Cheers

bandit “When Hadlee etc was on  TV1,  kids were playing cricket in the parks etc. Have not seen a kid playing cricket anywhere”.

I used to watch and enjoy cricket in the Hadlee days.  Haven’t watched it at all since Sky got it.  My kids have never watched cricket and have no interest in it.  As for rugby, I stand on the sidelines and enjoy my local team’s games, but haven’t regularly watched national/international rugby since Sky/Prime got it.  Prime doesn’t broadcast in my area.  Again, my kids have no interest in it.

Sky’s not all to blame though.  The sporting bodies are the ones who are selling the rights.

A great idea would be for sky to allow people to purchase just the sports channels, I cant seee this happening though because sky would lose quite a few subscribers who currently get the full package.
