“Baking is my outlet. It’s my secret vice after dinner with a glass of red wine.”
Dyani is a 26-year-old journalist, drama teacher and Mum of one from Tauranga.
She finds time to bake several times a week, always after work. “I’m also a busy Mum, my husband calls me a loony as he doesn’t know where I get the energy from – but I find baking extremely relaxing and calming. It’s a great escapism.”
Dyani was taught how to bake by her Mum and her two grandmothers. “I’ve always wanted to work with food. I think it was pretty much inevitable – I’ve grown up with an Austrian grandmother who carried sausages around in her apron and a mother who always baked for us kids, so it’s definitely in the blood!”
Describes her food as just like her personality: sweet, cuts to the chase, generous serves and has the odd surprise where you least expect it.
She’s ready to give it her all on the show… “no half-heartedness from me. I’m a go-go sort of person so I don’t muck around. I get into a zone and then just do it!”
Signature dish: Perfect Caramel Square, which she bakes weekly. She’s perfected her recipe so that each layer – the base, the gooey caramel, and the rich icing – is just right!
