3D coverage of Rugby World Cup confirmed

The International Rugby Board has confirmed today that the final, semi-finals and third-place playoff at this year’s Rugby World Cup will be available in 3D on Sky Television and other venues around New Zealand and overseas.

Auckland company 3DLive will take care of the filming, providing footage for broadcasters around the world.

3DLive director Ronel Schodt says the 3D coverage would add to the viewing experience. “You really do feel as if you are in the front row of the stadium.”

Sky Television indicated last year that they were not interested in filming in 3D themselves due to the small number of consumers with 3D televisions.

Rugby World Cup chairman Bernard Lapasset says it is a significant development for the event.

“In a sport where tradition and innovation go hand in hand we will give rugby fans a new viewing dimension.”
