The Last Trimate

ANIMAL PLANET – Sunday 29 May, 8.30pm

The Last Trimate is an intimate insight into the challenges faced today by one of mankind’s closest living relatives.

In the late 1960s, legendary anthropologist Louis Leakey appointed three women to study and care for the great apes of the world: Dian Fossey, Jane Goodall and Birut Galdikas. Thirty-five years later Dr Galdikas is responsible for the longest study of an animal species by a single person ever conducted. Known as the “Trimates”, Dr Galdikas is the least recognised of these three women, yet her crusade is no less compelling. No-one knows more about Orangutans than she.

This stunning documentary is a compelling account of the work of Dr Birut Galdikas and her lifelong fight to save the diminishing world of Indonesia’s wild Orangutans – a habitat threatened by rampant deforestation and palm oil plantations.
