Cafe Secrets premieres on TV3

5:00pm – Sunday, July 17 on TV 3

Cafe Secrets is a brand new local series featuring top chef, food writer and former cafe owner, Julie Le Clerc as she visits New Zealand’s best cafes. Julie meets the cafe owners and finds out how they got started, what their signature dishes are and learns the secrets behind them when the series starts on Sunday, July 17 th at 5pm on 3. Each cafe that Julie visits has a special connection with its local community. “Cafe Polo” in Wellington makes baking for SPCA charity dog walks and the owners of the “Boatshed Cafe” help out with a multi-sport event that sees dozens of kayakers paddle past their deck. Julie gets stuck in and helps out every time, whether it’s feeding hungry workers at a community garden; judging a cupcake competition; or attending a special Sabbath meal with an orthodox Jewish family. “It was a pleasure and a privilege for me to meet the various cafe owners and to share time with them in their busy cafe kitchens,” says Julie. “I felt an instant connection with them, as we share a cafe background and a passion for creating great cafe-style food. Each cafe has its own personality and unique story to tell and I was inspired by each owner’s passion and dedication to their business and the wonderful community connections they have created.”

Along the way, Julie shares some of her favourite recipes. She reveals hundreds of professional culinary tricks to make decadent chocolate cakes, eggs benedict with creamy Hollandaise sauce and macademia nut and feijoa loaves turn out just right.

“Viewers will discover secret recipes for some of the most popular cafe dishes served in New Zealand!” promises Julie.

In the first episode, Julie meets Craig and Kirsty Joiner, who opened the “Boatshed Cafe” in Rawene 15 years ago. Craig shows Julie how to make the cafe’s signature dish: Asian-style fresh flounder, wrapped in foil and baked in the oven and Julie cooks up a hearty seafood chowder, olive oil cake with a tangy citrus sauce and a colourful beetroot salad with a hot bacon dressing.

Forget flat friands and soggy carrot cakes! Watch and learn as Julie uses 20 years plus of kitchen knowledge to demonstrate how to create perfect cafe cuisine – at home on Cafe Secrets, screening on Sunday, July 17 th at 5pm on 3.
