New hosts announced for Good Morning

Jeanette Thomas and Rod Cheeseman will be the new hosts of the Auckland based Good Morning in 2012.

Jeanette Thomas is no stranger to Good Morning, she has temporarily hosted the show on two occasions. Most recently she has been the breakfast newsreader on The Breeze radio station as well as co-hosting consumer show, Target.

“I’m hugely excited about co-hosting Good Morning. I’ve long been a fan of the show. I have had the opportunity previously to fill in, and loved live television as well as working with such a fabulous team. This opportunity is a dream come true. I am counting down the days for 2012 to begin!” says Thomas.

Rod Cheeseman, a regular on TVNZ and TV3 sports shows, is diversifying into the live, lifestyle format. Rod has had experience in morning television having worked on Mediawork’s Sunrise before moving to TVNZ.

“I’m looking forward to the challenge of presenting the new look Good Morning show. Having been a stay-at-home Dad I know a bit of daytime telly can be a sanity saver,” says Cheeseman.

“Sarah and Brendon have done an amazing job building a large and loyal following to the show. I will do my best to continue on from their hard work.”

Rod and Jeanette are both parents of two small children and this will be the first time they have worked together.

Wellington-based hosts Sarah Bradley and Brendon Pongia will be departing the show at the end of the year. They joined the Good Morning team six years ago and in that time they have increased ratings and grown a loyal viewership year-on-year.

Sarah Bradley says, “Naturally I am very sad to be leaving such a wonderful show which brings so much fun and entertainment to our morning viewers but I have worked with Jeanette and Rod before and they are talented broadcasters who will take the show to its next stage.”

Good Morning will move to Auckland studios in the New Year. The last show for this year will be on 9th December.

I think TV3 just raised their IQ a little by losing Jeanette Thomas to TVNZ.

TVNZ unable to raise up their own talent? Relying on poaching TV3′s recognisable faces huh?

  • craig

Mike McRoberts, Michelle Pickles, Duncan Garner, Carol Hirschfeld, Simon Shepherd, Hamish Clarke, Ali Ikram, Mike Hall, Michael Wilson, Mihi Forbes, Sasha McNeil, versus Neil Waka, Rod Cheeseman, Hannah Hodson, Kate Lynch, Petra Bagust, Jeanette Thomas.  3 still comes out as taking more from TVNZ than vice versa.

Criag, it was a tongue in cheek comment, but you’d have to say that the flow of “talent” of late is from TV3 to TVNZ. And interestingly, the most recent move the other way occurred prior to Sunrise (Ali and Sacha), which was four years ago. You also forget to mention Greg Boyd and Wendy Petrie as ones who moved from TV3 to TVNZ.

Here’s someone’s comment from a Stuff.co.nz article on the same topic that I couldn’t agree more with:

“Television and radio in this country are a closed little clique of tired old (and not so old) faces in a job swapping exercise. Surely we must have better talent out there and TV in this country would benefit massively if they did away with cronyism and raised their standards to a professional level.”

Reuse and recycle, reuse and recycle. It’s a miracle they didn’t hire Marc Ellis or get Mary Lambie back!

Each year hundreds (thousands?) of bright, young people graduate from broadcasting / acting / journalism schools and courses, with the goal (dream more like) of becoming the next Hillary Barry, Cliff Curtis or Jay Jay / Mike or Dom. Each year only a smattering of productions come out and far, FAR too many places in those productions are taken by old hacks who have had way past their 15 minutes of fame.

How about some form of time / term limit in such positions? that way everyone can get their chance to “strut and fret upon the stage” before giving someone else a chance.

Good Morning made my days in NZ so much more enjoyable.  Thanks, Brendan & Sarah, for all your hard work.  It was a joy watching you each day.  As an American new to NZ, I got such a wonderful sense of what New Zealanders were all about.  You introduced me to some great NZ talent.  Your comfortable, homey style was so refreshing after seeing the super-polished USA shows for years.  I wish you all the best in whatever you choose to do next.  I hope to see you on the air when I return to NZ in a year.

I agree, moving from Wellington isn’t a good idea.  Wellington is in the middle of your country.  It’s a pleasant mix of big city and rural.  Political figures were readily available for comments & interviews.  Auckland is a great city, but it is so far removed from the southern area of the north island, and on another planet in relation to the south island.  Good luck keeping a balance in your program.

New hosts, welcome aboard.  You have very big shoes to fill.  When I return to NZ I’ll be looking for the comfortable program I came to love.
