F. Scott Fitzgerald’s story is brought to the screen in a sumptuous production capturing expatriate life in Paris. Told in flashbacks, Charles Wills (Van Johnson) recalls his troubled past as a GI with literary ambitions who meets lovely Helen Ellswirth (Elizabeth Taylor) in Paris after World War II. They marry and he settles down to write a novel, but he turns to drink when he fails to sell any of his work. Soon his drinking drives them apart, and then tragedy follows.
