Documentary Series

Twenty years ago, zoologist Mark Carwardine teamed up with the late Douglas Adams (author of the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy) and together they embarked on a groundbreaking expedition, travelling the globe in search of some of the world’s most endangered animals. Now Mark has teamed up with one of Douglas Adam’s closest friends – actor and comedian, Stephen Fry – to see how the animals have fared during the intervening period.

Tonight, Stephen and Mark travel to Madagascar in search of the mysterious nocturnal aye-aye, a lemur so ugly that it is said locally to bring death to those who encounter it. The boys visit Nosy Mangabe, an idyllic island where Mark encountered aye-aye on his original visit with Douglas Adams. Not finding the animal they head south and Stephen gets his first encounter with Ring Tailed Lemurs and Sifaka, the strange ‘dancing’ lemur. They visit a village and learn of the superstitions that have meant the aye-aye has traditionally been persecuted, but they also see at first hand a greater threat; the trashing of forest to grow commercial crops needed by the west.
