TCM – Friday 25 May, 8.30pm
This film started the hugely successful genre of the American Musicals, inspiring the making of three later films by the same name. Starring top actresses from the Silent era Anita Page and Bessie Love, this is the story about two sisters who travel to the Big Apple to make themselves a hit on the Broadway circuit. Although The Jazz Singer (1927) is historically recorded as the first sound picture to be publicly screened, The Broadway Melody was widely distributed to movie theatres across the country. Directed by Harry Beaumont.
