Criticism over techniques used on Last Chance Dogs

New TVNZ series Last Chance Dogs has come under fire from dog trainers who believe some techniques used on the series are dangerous.

Napier trainer Alison Marett claims the show’s trainer Gina Voglar uses unnecessarily aggressive techniques on the dogs.

Voglar is seen using choke chains and pinching and pulling the animals’ skin in order to get their attention as well as using other animals to test the temperament of the aggressive dogs.

“I know someone who attempted to use the technique of blocking her dog and she got bitten,” Marett said.

“There is a disclaimer on this programme but people don’t watch that. They do what they see. They do it by copying and learning.”

A TVNZ spokesperson confirmed that “a handful” of formal complaints had been received.
