The makers of New Zealand children’s show The WotWots have signed a deal with a Chinese animation school to create an international animation technology research centre.
Pukeko Pictures will team up with the Beijing Film Academy’s animation school to establish the research centre.
Martin Baynton, the co-owner of Pukeko Pictures, said: “It’s a world market for children’s TV and China’s been fairly close to Western shows for a long time.”
Baynton says The WotWots has been a hit with children in China.
“They love it,” he said.
“That’s why this deal’s come about it. When we made the WotWots we made it to be an international show.”
Baynton credits the government in making the deal possible.
“You don’t just turn up at a trade show and sell into China, it’s about building relationships and networks,” he said.
“Two successive governments have paved the way for New Zealand businesses to do just that.”
