Our cameras were granted unprecedented access at one of the world’s most famous hotels in the most turbulent period in its history. The story starts on 15th December 2007, an emotional day, as The Savoy closes its doors for the first time in 118 years. We follow General Manager, Kiaran MacDonald (pictured right), in charge of the refurbishment and re-opening of the hotel. However, things don’t go to plan for Kiaran, the �100m budget is soon spent and on the day of the scheduled re-opening the hotel is still a building site.
The construction site manager, John Ferrari, does his best to keep the 1000 strong workforce in line and on schedule but the completion date slips 12 months behind the original prediction. In the meantime the hotel staff can only plan for the re-opening. Head butler, Sean Davoren, starts his recruitment drive for his brand new team of hotel butlers while Head Chef, Ryan Murphy, starts preparing for the launch of the hotel’s new flagship restaurant. Finally the news comes that Kiaran has been waiting for – the day they can finally announce the hotel will open. From now on its all hands on deck as every department rushes to train and prepare the 600 staff for the big day. It’s a fraught time as the butlers, cooks and front of house staff strive to live up to the 5-star standard of service demanded of them, with just days before the doors open. Part one of two.
