Christmas 2006 and South Australian Pat Poskey is enjoying a coffee in a cafe on his holiday in Thailand. He’s waiting for his girlfriend Ariel to arrive at which point he would ask her to marry him. Without warning, however, two policemen walk into the cafe and tell Pat that he needs to come with them. Oblivious to what he is being charged with, Pat becomes quickly aware that he has been targeted in an extortion operation. A ‘lady boy’ from a nearby bar has identified Pat as the owner of a handful of used bullet shells. Although completely innocent, Pat is told that he will be driven to an ATM to pay a hefty fine. Pat is compliant but a fine would have been a good result in comparison to the nightmare that was about to unfold.
