8:30pm Tuesday, August 7 on TV One
TV ONE’s inspiring new series, First Crossings follows two modern day New Zealand adventurers, Kevin Bigger and Jamie Fitzgerald, as they recreate the journeys of pioneer New Zealand explorers.
But Kevin and Jamie are not only following in their footsteps, they’ll be experiencing some of the same conditions and dangers the original explorers faced. They’ll wear the same clothing and footwear, eat the same food, and use the same equipment.
Tonight, Kevin and Jamie travel back to 1894 to retrace the first ascent of Mount de la Beche by Tom Fyfe and George Graham – the first major peak conquered by New Zealand-born climbers.
In the shadow of Mount Cook, Kevin and Jamie must traverse through crevice filled glaciers, before climbing a rock wall likened to a vertical bowling alley.
Finally, they must make their way across a thin ice shelf before overcoming the altitude-sapping, last haul to the summit.
