Petra Bagust leaving breakfast

TV One’s Breakfast co-host Petra Bagust has announced that she is leaving the show at the end of the year.

The announcement was made live on air this morning and will end her short two year run on the program.

“I’ve loved taking on the challenge of Breakfast, 2011 was the biggest news year in a decade, and it was a privilege going live to the country three hours a morning, keeping Kiwis informed and trying to help make sense of natural disasters like the Christchurch earthquake, Japan’s quake and tsunami,” said Bagust.

“Two incredible years full of tragedy and triumphs – especially when you add the Royal Wedding, the Rugby World Cup and the Olympics into the mix.

“It’s been a rollercoaster ride – Breakfast is bloody hard work, and it takes a lot of effort from an incredibly committed group of people to make it happen. I want to say thanks for having me on the team. Bring on summer and 2013,” she said in a statement.

TVNZ will now find themselves in a familiar position needing to find a new co-host and possible reinvent the early morning show.

You always wonder (particularly in this case) if Petra left on her own or given the option by TVNZ to ‘depart on her own terms’ while she could. Toni Street always worked well with Rawdon on saturday breakfast but would she want this job after her return from maternity leave?

Her contract was up and if you’ve seen the audience share recently you’ll understand why it wasn’t renewed

Explains it then. She will be plotting (or begging) for her return to TV3 then wont she, watch out Whats Really In Our Food? host Carolyn Robinson.

I wonder if Petra will be involved with X Factor? I could see her doing a show like that, perhaps TV3 got in touch with her :)

TVNZ should get Samantha Hayes to join the crew.
