Showrunner confirms intentions for Arrested Development movie

Comments from Arrested Development showrunner Mitch Hurwitz appear to confirm plans for a movie version of the show following the upcoming fourth season.

While there has been no official word from Netflix – who will exclusively carry the new season – or from any studio, Hurwitz gives off the vibe that the season is working towards a full cast reunion in a movie.

“The bigger story is the family has fallen apart at the start of our show,” Hurwitz told USA Today. “They all went their own way, without Michael holding them together, so they’re left to their own devices, and they’re not the most successful devices. [Season 4 is the] first act to what we eventually want to do, which is a big movie.”

He added that the season will intentionally build towards a movie.

“It was such a joy to be back with everybody; it didn’t feel like work, it felt like being back with friends. You don’t see them all together until you see the movie, [but] I can assure you that the characters are just as damaged, self-involved and self-righteous as ever.”

He said that no new episode of the series will feature all of the cast, due to the actors’ differing availabilities while shooting.

“The show will look very different,” he added.
