Quick fire Q&A with Raj Varma

raj-varma-ganesh-the-blue-roseRaj Varma plays Ganesh, the geeky I.T Manager at the law firm Mosely & Loveride in TV3’s thriller/drama, The Blue Rose.

What does your job entail?
Learning copious amounts of lines and trying not to look terrified when the director calls action.

If you could have any other job in the TV industry, what would it be?
Probably a producer. Cause they have all the POWER, y’all!

What is the best part of working in the TV industry?
If you are principal lead in a series you go on a journey with your fellow cast members and crew. If the stars align and it’s a best case scenario you can make life long friends and bond with everyone. It’s awesome. Amazing connections with incredibly hard working and talented individuals. When this happens I thank the Gods of TV daily.

What was your favourite TV show when you were a child?
That’s a tough one, I can’t name one, but I loved Knight Rider, Magnum P.I., Chips and Battlestar Gallactica. I also really loved The Greatest American Super Hero.

What do you think has been the worst idea for a reality show so far?
God, there are so many bad ones. The Shahs of Sunset is pretty awful. Let’s follow rich Persians in America to try to make people less prejudiced against Persians. Though I have to say that the dude with the moustache is pretty funny.

What was your first ever job in television?
I played a doctor in Letter to Blanchy with Mcphail and Gatsby. I had to come out of the back of an ambulance and deliver my lines to both of them (with Peter Rawley too). I was terrified.

Where do you see yourself in five years?
Working in the industy here in America. It’s the next step. Though sometimes it feels like one step forward and two steps backwards. But what New Zealand taught me was this… Never, ever GIVE UP! Wish me luck!

See Raj Varma as Ganesh on The Blue Rose, Monday’s, 9:30pm on TV3.

Seems like a nice guy, pity he’s in such a damn terrible show.

I disagree. I think it’s a well polished show. It’s just that some of the characters in it are repulsive.

Well, I don’t disagree a hell lot of money got spent on.

Only problem is that the show is tediously slow and the characters are dumb. I guess in so far as you can polish a turd, it’s pretty well polished.
