Sky to launch new "programming favourites" channel

jones-channel-logoI imagine that this could quickly become the new favourite channel for all those people who are constantly (particularly on here) complaining about how bad today’s tv programming is compare to the “good old days”.

At SKY we love TV and we are excited to announce the launch of JONES!, a brand new channel offering an affectionate homage to television’s finest moments with an eclectic mix of programming favourites from a time where innocent first screen crushes were made and friendships lasted a lifetime.

JONES! will launch on Monday 13 May, 2013 at 13.00 (1.00pm) on SKY Channel 013 and will be available to all SKY’s domestic customers with the basic package at no extra charge.

“For many New Zealanders this will be like catching up with some old friends, with content we have all grown up with ranging from Bonanza and The Good Life to Porridge and Twin Peaks,” said SKY CEO John Fellet.

“We are continually looking to broaden the range of programming available to our basic tier subscribers and we know the inclusion of JONES! with its schedule of favourite British and American series will have a wide appeal across our audiences,” he said.

“It was a natural progression to add a channel like JONES! to our basic tier and make it available to all customers” added SKY Television’s Director of Entertainment Programming, Travis Dunbar.

“We definitely see the channel as an entertaining and compelling addition to our basic tier line up.   I remember seeing Kojak when it was first screened in this country and for me and many others this type of classic content will bring back brilliant childhood memories,” he said.

The name is also a nod to 70’s slang for being extremely fond of something and was chosen to reflect the content.

“We wanted to avoid anything predictable in favour of an ‘everyman’ name that befits the effervescence and colour of this eclectic content.  New Zealand’s own Brandspank have done a wonderful job of creating a fun, friendly and iconic identity for the channel,” said Mr Dunbar.

JONES! programming features British and American content that has stood the test of time including Cheers, Columbo, The Wonder Years, Dad’s Army, Thunderbirds, Mork & Mindy, Minder, the Star Trek franchises, Shogun, It Ain’t Half Hot Mum, The Bionic Woman, Kojak, Happy Days, Charlie’s Angels, TJ Hooker and many more.

Relax and catch up with some old friends when JONES! launches, Monday 13 May, 2013 at 13.00 (1.00pm) on SKY Channel 013.

This is the perfect channel for me as a retro TV buff but I’d like to see some local content from the 70’s and 80’s (that TVNZ haven’t disposed of) on there as well.

a channel full of repeats, probably shows old enough to not cost sky anything. cutting edge stuff Sky.. ( wonder if they stole the idea from the channel called Dave in the UK )

  • Wonder if JONES will have shows like Wonder Woman, Fantasy Island, Love Boat, Welcome Back Kotter, V, The Brady Bunch, Three’s Company, The Partridge Family 🙂

  • Hope JONES includes CHiPs 🙂

Nooooooooo looks like I’ll be My Skying even more programs. I’d love them to show Dallas, Dynasty or one of the other big night soaps.

  • Funny, I don’t think I remember T J Hooker ever coming here but I remember seeing a bit of it when I was in the states in 1984. It stars William Shatner. I assume it was too expensive at the time to bring here, as has been a number of shows I think.

I hope Sky considers including classic Australians shows too – in particular Prisoner Cell Block H. Definitely stands the test of time. I’ve bought half the whole series – that’s a lot of DVDs, and every episode is absorbing.

  • Add to the list Follyfoot, Colditz (the original series, not the recent mini series). A Family At War, The Pallisers, Dangerman, The Forsyte Saga (original series), UFO, Space 1999, Timeslip, Poldark. Secret Army, Harry Worth, Callan…the list goes on!
