General Discussion - November 21, 2013

Yesterday’s announcement that Dancing With the Stars was returning generated quite a bit of discussion, particularly around hosts.  It is a regular observation that talent in New Zealand is recycled more regularly than many would like, with fresh faces coming through being a rarity.

While there are plenty of other topics you may wish to discuss today, as a conversation starter, which would you prefer to see more of, new talent coming through or tried and trusted faces?

Depends on the person, I think. personally I’m not a fan of Tamati as a host but Jason Gunn I think is good…both I guess you could say are “tried and tested”

    • disqus_w9JKY8O72e

You’re like me. Jason Gunn is the only person to host it.

  • Jeseta

I think the problem with the ‘new talent’ that seem to pop up is low standards. I don’t know who decides that someone has the ability to host television but some poor decisions have been made recently. One that stands out to me is Shannon Ryan on The Block. She has a serious lack of charisma, a very annoying tone in her speech and a low likeabilty factor to put it kindly. If a fresh face with REAL ability can’t be found then I see no reason not to rely on old favourites.

Any thoughts on Matt Gibb? I personally think he’s great and he is TVNZ come to think of it. It would be a step up to host a big show like DWTS but maybe he could be given the chance?

    • disqus_w9JKY8O72e

Yeah, Matt Gibb is worth a go to me.

      • Jeseta

Maybe Regan would consider running a poll? Tamati Coffey/Jason Gunn/Other? It might be a bit presumptuous of me to put Matt Gibb in there….

        • disqus_w9JKY8O72e

I think Jason Gunn is the best option they’ve got. Tamati…. meh. I’ve seen him hosting New Zealand’s Got Talent. Not the wisest choice TVNZ made.

          • K

Stacey Morrison! Now there’s a suggestion. I think she is great. And Matt Gibb could work too!

          • K

Someone who no one has suggested is Brendan Pongia, I’m not that sold on him myself but others might think so. Might be worth adding to the poll?

          • disqus_w9JKY8O72e

            Mmmmmm! Not sold on him.

        • Regan Cunliffe

What are all the options and I’ll set one up for you

          • Jeseta

Cool! My picks for a poll would be Jason Gunn/ Tamati Coffey/ Matt Gibb/ Dominic Bowden/ Stacey Morrison/ Other. But if anyone else would like to add someone else please comment! I’d like everyone to be represented!

          • disqus_w9JKY8O72e

Interesting you said Stacey Morrison. Dominic Bowden, no.

          • Jeseta

I think it’s only fair he is there as an option. I was trying to think of another option when I realised there were no female picks and there is no reason a woman couldn’t be the lead host, Stacey Morrison popped into my head and I think she would be a good host.

          • disqus_w9JKY8O72e

Yep. Another person that just popped into my head is Lana Cocroft.

          • Jeseta

Is she still working in TV? I can’t even remember the last time I saw her.

          • disqus_w9JKY8O72e

            I’m just spitballing here.

          • Maggie

Definitely no to Stacey Morrison – to me, she’s one of these types where her mouth smiles but her eyes are cold.
Miriama Smith would be far better.

          • Jeseta

But has Miriama Smith ever hosted anything? I really don’t think you can plonk a nice actor in there, they need experience.

          • Harrison

How about Clinton Randell, Brooke Howard-Smith, Amber Peebles or Jay Reeves

    • Maggie

I suggested Matt Gibb in another post yesterday (or was it the day before)?
He’s a tad ‘green’ but with a bit of training he’d be brilliant. He seems like a lovely, personable guy which is a fantastic start.
I agree with you about Shannon – what. an. airhead. Why can’t they get some decent hosts for ‘The Block’? (I don’t like Richardson, either). That guy Cocksy would be quite good – and, I’m just going to say this – Petra as the co-host! Because she was awesome in that show ‘Hot Property’ way back when and I think this sort of show could be her calling. (I was not a fan of her on ‘Breakfast’).
As for the suggestions below about Lana and Brendon … no, and no. Lana is not warm and friendly; and Brendon does not possess the charisma that this hosting role needs.

      • Jeseta

I don’t know if I would consider Matt ‘green’, he’s been working in television for years now. He hosted a children’s TV show way back when, at least a decade ago (?).

I can’t stand Mark Richardson, I wonder if anyone actually likes him? He just seems like a smug jackass haha!

I think Cocksy and Petra is a great idea for The Block, too bad it seems ike they are happy with their current choices….

        • Maggie

Maybe ‘green’ is the wrong word I’m trying to find to describe him – I really like him and think he seems so lovely (have seen him on Good Morning as well as the Telecom ads, Lotto, and U), but he just seems a bit stiff in some ways. I can’t put my finger on it.
But I definitely think he’s one to watch out for – he is fantastic.
He’s quite young, so maybe it’s just a maturity thing.

  • Regan Cunliffe

    What about Shannon Ryan?

    • Jeseta

Yes, we’ve had a few other suggestions to consider adding – Shannon Ryan, Brendan Pongia, Lana Coc-Kroft. Maybe Sonia Gray?

      • disqus_w9JKY8O72e

        I’ve got it. Thingee. Joking!

        • Jeseta

Well he has more charisma than some people working in television today! 😀

          • disqus_w9JKY8O72e

Then it would be called Dancing With The Thingees! LOL!

    • Maggie

      Bwahahaha – NO!
And surely the producers of The Block can find a better ‘co host’ (one that actually makes a valid contribution) next time ’round?

  • Maggie

I’ve just thought of the female to go with my Simon Barnett suggestion:
Erika Takacz (sp?) – the woman who was in ‘True Bliss’ and went on to host the music video hits show on TV2 quite a few years back (whatever it was called – Ready to Roll type show). I have no idea what she does now, but I always thought she was a really good host – very natural, and completely at ease with interviewing people from all walks of life.
Another possibility would be the lady who appears on Four, who works for The Edge (I think her name is Sharon?) – she’d be good too!
I don’t think they necessarily need someone with ballroom dancing knowledge to co-host – they could always have an ‘expert’ on standby in the dressing room if they did.
I always found Candy to be very stiff and unnatural to watch.

    • tv3isbest

I really don’t think sharon is a good choice as she is one of those try hard presenters. Any thoughts on Rose Matafeo, presented on U and is quite funny?

      • Jeseta

I think Rose is fantastic but I don’t think a comedian is right for this role, Rose is much better suited to Jono and Ben at Ten where she is now.

I’m not keen on Sharyn either…

We’ve got 40 votes atm, it would be great to get as many as possible to get an idea of what people are wanting from the show. Consider tweeting or posting the poll on facebook so your friends/family can vote too!

        • tv3isbest

i don’t think she is best either, Do you like the idea of Paris Goebel on the Judging panel? its something to ponder on.

          • Jeseta

I didn’t recognise the name off-hand, so I googled it and I have read about her/seen news spots about her. As far as I remember her style is just hip-hop? If that’s the case I don’t think a ballroom dancing show would be a good fit for her.

          • tv3isbest

yeah, but it would be good as she is diverse in the dance community and will bring younger audiences in. also she is the worlds best hip hop dancer and the remainder of the panel can be ballroom.

          • Jeseta

I respect that idea, but I still think it makes sense to have judges experienced in the world of professional ballroom dancing so they are familiar with what they are judging.

          • tv3isbest

fair enough, i hope anyway they get Craig Revel-Horwood back though. And Mike Puru as a Host?

          • Jeseta

It will be interesting to see who they pick as judges, it seems that they will be cutting as many ties with the previous version as possible so we might not see any of the same judges back. Yet I imagine it’s difficult to find appropriate people for the job here in NZ.

Mike Puru is another one, didn’t make it into the poll from yesterday’s suggestions. I voted for Matt Gibb.

  • Maggie

… I like the ‘Sonia Gray’ suggestion – she’d be awesome!

  • Robyn Gallagher

What if they followed the lead of Strictly Come Dancing and got a showbiz veteran, akin to Bruce Forsyth? Apparently the stars on Strictly are told to laugh heartily at Brucie’s otherwise unfunny pun-based jokes, so something like that would be even more awesome to see on NZ telly. Who can be coaxed out of retirement?
