TVNZ has provided a statement regarding their decision to not renew Nothing Trivial for a fourth season.
TVNZ has made the call not to renew Nothing Trivial at the end of its third series.
We absolutely love the show and we’re really disappointed more people didn’t come to it this year, but we have to follow the lead of our audience. If they’re walking away from a show in significant numbers we have to pay attention.
The fact is 2013 has been the series’ lowest rating season to date: audiences are significantly down on last year. We’ve gone from an average audience 412,000 for series 2 to an average audience of 258,000 this year, which is well below what we’d hoped for.
Nothing Trivial is a fantastic show and we are really proud of it. It has great characters, strong storylines and sharp writing, which has been brought to life by a group of talented actors and a fantastic production team. There’s still two episodes to go – the last episode of Nothing Trivial will screen on TV ONE on Wednesday 4 December at 8.30pm.
TVNZ remains committed to supporting the local drama industry. Looking ahead we’re got some exciting new work in production and we’re developing a number of ideas, which will call on the skills and talents of our creative community.
As you know (ahem!) from attending our New Season Launch, we think our local drama offering for 2014 is particularly strong: Shortland Street and Agent Anna are back and we’ll be launching new comedy-dramas Step Dave and Cover Band. We’ll also present a season of all-new Sunday Theatres on TV ONE, which will tell some of New Zealand’s most dramatic stories with the very best of local writers, actors and directors at the helm.
