Q&A with Brooke Howard Smith

brooke-howard-smith-fullHost of the new TV3 show Cabdury Dream Factory, Brooke Howard Smith is no stranger doing what he can to make a difference in peoples lives.  When Christchurch suffered through their earthquakes, there was Brooke doing what he could to help those affected by one of New Zealand’s worst disasters with the Rise Up Christchurch telethon which raised over $2.5 million.

Here is our Q&A with him.

1. What does your job entail?
I host the show, I meet our dreamers, find out what makes them tick and why they have these amazing dreams… Mostly though it’s about me pretending I’ve helped organize all the amazing things that have happened, taking credit for them, that kind of stuff.

2. Share your favourite work story
The other day we reunited a Filipino family, the parents hadn’t seen their young girls for 7 years, since they were 3 and 5. They had no idea we’d flown them in. It was just amazing… Lots of happy tears

3. What are your three favourite TV shows right now?
Game of Thrones, Grand Designs, Hustling America

4. Finish this sentence: The new TV show I can’t wait to see is…
I really haven’t seen Dream Factory so that’s at the top of my list, I’ve seen bits and they’ve done an amazing job, but I get to watch my first episode tonight with the cast & crew. Apart from that definitely new Game of Thrones.

5. If you could have any other job in the TV industry, what would it be, and why?
I’m very keen to get a reality show up and running this year, I love producing and organizing shows…

6. What was your favourite TV show when you were a child?
I remember watching Buck Rodgers a lot

7. What is the best part of working in the TV industry?
It’s a great place to problem solve and there aren’t many creative jobs that pay well!

8. Which TV character/show best mirrors your life?
Wow, hmmm, I don’t know, I’m all over the place, Ralf or Potsey in Happy Days? Point is I’m definitely not The Fonz or Ritchie or Apu in the Simpsons?

9. What do you think are the biggest challenges in TV over the next three years?
Maintaining audience, re-consolidating viewers. TV’s key advantage is that it’s a managed portal. That aggregation will always have to happen, for TV networks to survive they need to justify their  place by selecting / building solid market relevant content and making it easier (easiest) to access.

10. What do you think has been the worst idea for a reality show so far?
The worst ideas are the best! I want to build a show called Monkey Business where people challenge chimpanzees to do their jobs. Stock Broker: “A chimp could never do my job” We train the chimp for 3 weeks, if he can do the job better than the broker, BAM! He’s fired, if not they win a banana based prize. However, the answer to your question is Rock of Love.
