Ratings: The Paul Henry Show week 2

After a declining first week, the second week of The Paul Henry Show delivered an upward trend for TV3’s new late night news show.  Up 3% on the previous week, TPHS had an average audience of 103,658 viewers per episode.  Overall it was a much better week for the show with only Monday’s show failing to deliver more than 100,000 viewers.

TV One’s Tonight had a 5% drop in viewers, down to 123,518.

Compared to last year though, The Paul Henry Show is delivering an audience that is 8% smaller overall than Nightline did for the same period.

So ‘The Paul Henry show’ hasn’t been an instant success. However it will be interesting to see the long-term trend over 2014 — especially whether ‘The Paul Henry Show’ will outpace ‘Nightline’.

I’d like to see TV ONE’s ‘Tonight’ add some useful additions to the line-up that are a useful point of difference that makes me want to watch ‘Tonight’ over ‘The Paul Henry Show’. I am not suggesting going back to the Eric Young, Kate Hawkesby format*; it should still be a solid news bulletin with the major stories of the day. But add something extra that is supported by audience research.

I quite liked the Greg Boyed-Renne Wright duo.

‘Tonight’ should have a consistent presenter who can make the bulletin ‘their own’ and work with the EP to decide on stories, etc. And the bulletin should be scheduled for a particular time each night.
