On Wednesday we asked TVNZ if they would make the entire series of Short Poppies available ondemand after this website highlighted the fact that the NZ On Air funded comedy Short Poppies was to screen on a subscription service in four other countries before screening in New Zealand. TVNZ have now confirmed that they will make the entire series available here first and exclusively on TVNZ Ondemand.
Television New Zealand is delighted to announce the launch of Short Poppies, the current affairs mockumentary by comedy superstar Rhys Darby, on Tuesday April 1st, at 6pm on TVNZ Ondemand.
All eight episodes of the NZ On Air-funded series will be launched at once, and will be available Ondemand for four weeks.
The series will be screening on TV ONE later in 2014.
Created and written by Rhys Darby, Short Poppies is a series of day-in–the-life exclusive interviews with a group of unique kiwi characters.
Each episode follows journalist David Farrier as he meets the seven ‘ordinary’ New Zealanders –all folk living in small town New Zealand, but each given a Rhys Darby twist.
There’s Bill Napier, head ranger of Pohutukawa Park; young entrepreneur Ron Taylor; ufologist Steve Whittle; serial complainer Mary Ledbetter; ‘muscle car’ enthusiast Rhod Gainer; lifeguard and part-time leg model Terry Pole; and artist and solo mother, Louise Cooper.
They’re the sort of people who wouldn’t normally get their time in the limelight, but who deserve celebrating in heart-warming, Darby-style.
Head of Television, Jeff Latch, says it’s important Short Poppies will be available first to New Zealand viewers.
“Short Poppies is a Kiwi show to its core, and it’s fantastic we can all get to enjoy it before the rest of the world,” says Mr Latch.
“It’s also a stunning complement to our other local comedies screening on TV ONE and TV 2.”
Rhys Darby says he’s thrilled New Zealand will get to see Short Poppies this week.
“The news that TVNZ has made the ground-breaking decision to show Short Poppies Ondemand first has sent me into a joyful dance not seen since last week’s ‘Woo Hoo I’m 40’ dance. (That was a personal dance for my wife and won’t be available online),” says Darby.
Short Poppies Tuesday April 1st at 6pm, TVNZ Ondemand.
