short-poppiesI have to admit, I’m really not a fan of awkward comedies. From Meet the Fockers to The Office to Hello Ladies, there really is so much I can take.  While I’m sure we can all attest to certain people who have crossed paths with us over the years, most people just aren’t either that stupid or that naive.

They also say that there is nothing new under the sun.  A series where the lead characters are all played by the same actor has certainly been done before.  Australia’s Chris Lilley in Summer Heights High and locally, Madeliene Sami’s Super City.

Last night I sat down and watched the first two episodes of Short Poppies thanks to TVNZ’s decision to put the entire 8 episode NZ On Air funded series online after we exposed that they had allowed the series to be made available overseas first.  There were certainly laugh-out-loud moments but there were also plenty of cringeworthy Rhys Darby moments that back all those memories of band manager Murray from Flight of the Conchords.

Darby plays a series of characters, a lifeguard and leg model in the first episode and a UFOlogist in the second.  Tying it all together is, ironically, TV3’s quirky reporter David Farrier who interviews and tells the story of each of these small town New Zealand characters.

The cameo by Stephen Merchant, who himself is no stranger to awkward comedy, is amusing but it does make you wonder if these actors can do anything else.

Depending on your love or hate of awkward moments, this is likely to be a show you will either love or hate.  For me, I’m in the middle.  It was entertaining enough for me to want to watch more but it’s no FoTC.

What did you make of the show?

I thought it was terrible. So unoriginal, it reeked of Chris Lilley, just not as funny. I couldn’t stand more than the first 15mins of the first episode. I am also a big fan of the office, flight of the conchords and the like… this is just a big miss.

I thought it was pretty funny but maybe that’s because I’m American 🙂
