Masterchef NZ Final - Sunday May 4

Welcome to the two-hour grand finale of Masterchef…and we are LIVE! (excuse the lack of details at some points, its hard to do it live!)

Here are my final super scientific Masterchef rankings:

This is probably the easiest ranking of the whole season:

1st: Kasey and Karena: Clear favourites’ from day one, and two hours away from being crowned Masterchef Champions. I hope. If not, please understand if this recap gets grumpy!

2nd: Jaimie and Bec: I have to give it to these two – they are fighters. If anyone in the competition could have a blinder and creep past Kasey and Karena, it would be these two. The problem is, it doesn’t seem like the public have warmed to them. Would people buy their cookbook? Would Countdown want Jaimie to sell their products?

On Throng, 82% of responders want a win for Kasey and Karena while 93 per cent of voters in a TVNZ website poll are picking them to beat Jaimie and Bec. This mirrors the comments on facebook. Jaimie has a lot of haters. I think it’s hard for New Zealander’s to handle the fierce competitiveness in her eyes. We prefer more cruisy/humble people, like Kasey and Karena.

Tonight there are three challenges to test our two duos. I am glad to see that one of the challenges will be a real restaurant kitchen challenge, as I think this has been lacking in this season of Masterchef. We also have Matt Moran, regular chef on Australian Masterchef, in the house tonight.

Who will win over $100 000 worth of prizes and the title of Masterchef 2014?

Let’s get on with the show:

We begin with a montage of different challenges and highlights from the season.  I have forgotten that some of those contestants even existed. The Donna Hay challenge seems so long ago.  It reminds me that this really is a long commitment for Kasey and Karena and Jaimie and Bec.

We see the contestants preparing for the final.  They are all nervous – go figure.

Now is the montage section where we see highlights for both duos throughout the season.  We are reminded of the audition dishes of both Karena and Kasey and Jaimie and Bec.  I think a lot of people thought Karena and Kasey would be in the finals from day one.  They have been top of the pack so many weeks in a row, compared with Jaimie and Bec who have had a more up and down journey to the finals.  Jaimie and Bec were even in bottom two at one stage.  I remember thinking that Karena and Kasey seemed off during the Samoa challenge, so I am glad to see that they are back on track.  Lastly we see both pairs being welcomed into the final.

Montage over.

Challenge One of Three – Matt Moran Pressure Test

  • In walks Matt Moran who has prepared dishes for the contestants to replicate today.
  • The dishes are lobster with ricotta gnudi and butter sauce and roast baby lamb with three different cuts – this dish has a lot of technique.
  • They have two hours to create these dishes.  Each dishes will be scored out of ten.

Karena and Kasey:

  • Karena is working on most of the lamb but has given Kasey the piece that needs to be sous-vide.  In the space of 20 seconds, we skip ahead one hour.
  • Kasey is working on the ricotta gnudi – it is similar to gnocci.  She put the semolina in when she was meant to leave the semolina out.  She keeps calm and just quickly makes up a new mix.
  • The loin and fillet are rolled up thicker than Matt Morans, so it may need to be cooked for longer.
  • Matt isn’t that impressed with the gnudi balls – they look like dog turds apparently haha.  He also thinks that Kasey may have worked them too much – they might be tough.
  • These girls seem much more on track than the Jaimie and Bec, who as usual, are looking quite frazzled.
  • Simon asks if they want an extra ten minutes – Jaimie and Bec say YES, and Karena and Kasey agree.  Both teams now have 20 minutes to go.
  • The crayfish is more mushy than Kasey is expecting it to be… hmm….fingers crossed she sorts it.
  • They have pictures to follow to help them with their plating, I always wondered how they remembered what the plating up looked like.
  • Karena’s lamb rack is undercooked.

Jaimie and Bec:

  • Jaimie is trying to stay calm (haha).  Bec cuts her finger two seconds into the challenge. That can’t be a good start.  MEDIC!  Bec has already made one mistake in her lamb because she cut it up instead of keeping it together.  Now it may potentially dry out.
  • Oh no! Jaimie used agar instead of meat glue.  I don’t know what is going to happen with that. She has to reopen her rolled lamb loin and re-add the meat glue.  6 minutes down the drain.
  • Bec has forgotten to do the pea puree and onions, and the Jaimie’s crayfish isn’t cooked.
  • Bec is having issues with her pea puree and she doesn’t have time to put it through a sieve.  I wonder if it will be smooth enough.
  • Plating is crazy and with 1 minute to go, Bec only has a pile of pea puree on her plate.  This is one really long minute.
  • Bec forgot her fennel.

Challenge One Judging:

Jaimie and Bec:

Matt thinks all the components are perfectly cooked.  Josh and Simon both think the lobster dish are perfect.  Matt thinks the lamb is cooked perfectly but he thinks the pea puree could be smoother.  Ray thinks that seasoning and presentation could be better.

Karena and Kasey:

Matt notices that the lamb rack is undercooked, and Simon says he is a bit worried about them. The crayfish dish doesn’t get much positive comments, and the lamb dish pea puree gets a big tick from Simon.  Ray thinks everything apart from the lamb rack is cooked well.

Scores:

Jaimie and Bec:

Crayfish: 9

Lamb: 9

Karena and Kasey:

Crayfish: 8

Lamb: 8

Total so far:

Jaimie and Bec: 18/20

Karena and Kasey: 16/20

Challenge Two: Service Challenge

The contestants are heading to Queenstown to open his second restaurant there – It is called Madam Woo.  They have to feed 180 people for the grand opening.  I think Karena and Kasey should handle the pressure better than Jaimie and Bec, but whenever I think they are out, they surprise me.  The interior of the restaurant is very asian, which may suit Bec who loves asian cuisine.  Josh is judging their cooking in the kitchen (haha Jaimie) and Ray and Simon are judging the dishes.

Josh explains what they are cooking but there is no way I can catch it all in the time he rattles it off.  I will do my best to figure it out as we go along!  Josh apologises in advance for how shitty he will be.

Jaimie and Bec:

  • Jaimie is working on a sambal that needs to be stirred regularly so it doesn’t stick on the bottom.  She is finding it hard because she has to stir it regularly and then run back to her bench.  Her sambal looks a lot differently compared with Karena and Kasey.  Jaimie is very defensive but she just needs to get over herself.
  • Bec thinks that Josh is picking on Jaimie.  Oh come on girls.  This isn’t primary school.
  • Bec gets the meat ready for the wontons and saves time on another dish by using the food processor.
  • Jaimie thinks that Karena and Kasey are trite for always saying that they are calm and that things are going well.  Maybe they are just calm and things are going well?
  • Bec has to be given another chef to help her since she is so far behind.  I hope Josh remembers that
  • Bec complains that Josh is helping Karena while she just got given a sou chef.  So much whining from these two in this challenge!
  • Jaimie has someone to help him with her eggplant.  Josh asks “What are YOU doing?” hahahahahahahha.
  • Bec is still complaining about the help that the other team are getting.  They only started helping because how far behind Bec was, and they have two helpers to Karena and Kasey’s one.
  • With one hour to service, the dessert hasn’t been started.

Karena and Kasey:

  • Karena begins by curing the salmon and then works on the prawn mixture for the dumplings.
  • Karena and Kasey seem to be on track with their dishes.
  • Karena is working on the dumplings while Kasey works on the chicken curry.
  • Karena has over 170 dumplings to do! Heck!
  • We are definitely seeing more of Jaimie and Bec than Kasey and Karena during this service challenge.

The contestants have to clean down their spaces so they are ready for plating.  Josh is full of beeps tonight. In 7 minutes, 2-3 dishes per team are heading out.

Judging:

When the judges are brought the food, it isn’t clear who has cooked what.  Simon loves the hot smoked salmon, and thinks the chicken is perfectly cooked.  The pork wontons get the stamp of approval from both judges.  Ray loves that the wontons aren’t greasy.  In general, all of the dishes are enjoyed by both judges.

We will hear the judges scores when the contestants get back to the Masterchef kitchen.  I think Josh should score Karena and Kasey better for their work in the kitchen.  All 20 points are going to be given by Josh because the dishes were too close to call.  Josh thinks that Kasey and Bec were the best workers in the challenge.

Jaimie and Bec:

Kitchen work: 18/20

Combined score: 36/40

Karena and Kasey:

Kitchen work: 18/20

Combined score: 34/40

Challenge Three has 60 points up for grabs.  That should be enough for Karena and Kasey to claw back the lead.  The contestants are wondering if it will be some epic dessert dish.

Challenge Three: Replicating judges dishes

The three dishes are pretty epic:

Simon’s dish: Kuzu bread with tomato jam, with gazpacho jelly, and quite a lot of other things.

Josh’s dish: Pork fillet in savoy cabbage with something to do with pigs head.

Ray’s dish: Chocolate trifle cake, with marinated prunes.  Yum yum.  Jaimie makes cakes for a living, so she should be comfortable with this.

This is such a hard challenge as all three dishes need to be finished at the same time, so they will have to be working on parts of each dish at the same time.  Each dish will be scored out of 20 making the final combined score out of 20.

The duos have three hours.  That is ridiculous, as Kasey agrees.

Jaimie and Bec:

  • Jaimie and Bec are sorting out the pork for Josh’s dish.
  • Jaimie is focusing on the cake, while Bec is working on Josh’s dish.  They are sharing the components of Simon’s dish.
  • The recipes are 8 pages long!
  • Ray is criticising Jaimie’s baking techniques.  I wonder how she will handle that.
  • Jaimie is worried because her bread hasn’t risen and her custard is a mess.  She forgot to put the bread in the oven on 50 degrees so it WOULD rise.
  • Jaimie is needing to assemble her cake and also make the gazpacho.  Ray notices a big mistake in Jaimie’s cake assembling.  She gets really rude to Ray, when really she should be listening to his advice and saying thank you.
  • The bread isn’t working for Jaimie, it is cracking on the tray.
  • Another part of Jaimie’s dish isn’t working so she heads back to work on her cake.
  • Bec can’t find part of her dish, but with seconds to go she finds it.  Chaotic plating as usual for Team Purple!

Karena and Kasey:

  • Kasey is working on Ray’s dessert while the pig head is being sorted by Karena.
  • Kasey is stirring and sifting at the same time, while eggs are being mixed.  Multitasking queen! She is worried that Jaimie might have an advantage with her cake knowledge and experience.
  • Karena’s gazpacho is working out well, by the time it is drained it will be clear and yum apparently.
  • Josh says that Karena’s dish has too much fat so it might not work.
  • We are seeing a lot more of Jaimie and Bec’s cooking, which seems to be a pattern tonight.  I assume Kasey and Karena are doing good.
  • Karena plates up Simon’s dish while Kasey works on the cake assembly.  The cake looks like it is going well, so thats a good sign.  Flip it looks yum!
  • They didn’t do the mustard part of one dish so they are hoping to improvise. Just put a bit of mustard on the side maybe?

Judges comments – Karena and Kasey:

  • Simon’s dish: Simon thinks the plating of his dish is excellent.  Simon thinks the dish is PERFECT!
  • Josh’s dish: Josh is happy with the dish, even though they missed some elements.
  • Ray’s dish: Ray thinks the presentation is off but he thinks it is still a great looking gateau.  Ray waxes lyrical about the cake and thinks it is very good indeed.

Judges comments – Jaimie and Bec:

  • Simon’s dish: There is no sphere inside.  Simon thinks the bread needed more cooking, and he thinks the basil missing was a big problem.
  • Josh’s dish: Josh can see that all the ingredients are there.  Josh thinks the pigs head was as good as his. He thinks the pork lacked seasoning but overall he calls it a great dish.
  • Ray’s dish: Ray can see a crack in the cake.  All in all, he says it is a pretty good job, but the comments are better for the girls in pink.

My prediction is a close win to Kasey and Karena in this challenge, hopefully by 3 points!  They had better comments for the entree and dessert, while Jaimie and Bec had better comments for the main.

Judges scoring:

Jaimie and Bec:

  • Simon’s dish: 15/20
  • Josh’s dish: 18/20
  • Ray’s dish:  14/20
  • Final score: 83

Karena and Kasey:

  • Simon’s dish: 20/20
  • Josh’s dish: 16/20
  • Ray’s dish: 16/20
  • Final score: 86

Kasey and Karena need an 18/20 for Simon’s dish! COME ON SIMON! WOO HOO, they get a 20/20!

The winners of Masterchef 2014 are KARENA AND KASEY!  They win two cars, $15000 worth of appliances, $15000 worth of Countdown vouchers and $5000 of Stephen’s products and a cook book deal!

I could not be more happier with the result! That brings my recapping for this season to the end. I will be back recapping House Rules on TV3 mid May.

Cue CONFETTI 🙂

  • Mara

Go Kasey and Karena!! Backing you girls 100%

  • Georgie

I wonder how close this final is going to be? Usually its a tight race.

  • zac

Thanks for the recaps. I am stuck overseas so I am depending on this! Go TEAM PINK!

  • S

What a complicated looking dish! My money is on Kasey and Karena to win the lot. Good luck girls 🙂

  • Clint

Having those blokes talk and interfere would pi$$ me off severely …

    • roger

same! I could not handle it.

  • Tania

    Shut up Josh!!!!!

  • Tania

The adverts showed them in a kitchen cooking with chefs, for real customers … hmmmm …

    • roger

Yeah, I think team pink will handle that pressure better.

      • Tania

Oh, so they are going to do that then? That’s good – I was thinking we were just going to be watching this challenge for 90 minutes. Phew!

        • roger

          3 challenges 🙂

  • S

I love how composed the pink girls are.

  • Tania

I agree Clint – blondie and her friend will win

    • roger

I think (and hope) that Karena and Kasey win!

      • Tania

I hope so too – but as Clint has pointed out, the judges like their blondes 😉

  • Tania

The blonde one owns a cafe in Queenstown …

    • roger

She sells cakes and cupcakes, and it looks like, from the ads, that there is a cake as part of one challenge, so she might have an advantage with that.

  • Tania

    Shut up Simon!!!!!

    • roger

      YELL YELL YELL haha

  • Tania

It’s interesting that Bec hasn’t been granted an extension given her injury … I would think three minutes is fair …

  • Georgie

That pea puree of Becs didn’t look too appetising…

  • Tania

Ewwww! They look like black furry insects on top of that dish

    • roger

      yeah that looks strange eh!

    • Deb

      LOL – feeling itchy?

    • Clint

Blondie’s and her friend’s insects didn’t have legs … they looked a bit more palatable, eh?

  • S

The way that Jamie acts in the kitchen really pisses me off

    • Tania

      Me too!

      • roger

        Me three!

    • Mara

      Me four!

    • Georgie

      Ugh! Same!

  • Mara

Oh no 🙁 not good comments for Kasey and Karena 🙁 all good girls! You’ve still got this!

    • Clint

They’re going to go for the shock factor and eliminate those girls I reckon

      • roger

That would be a huge shock, and people would be so pissed! Some people would say “I am never watching again” but I bet they would be back!

        • Deb

I have to agree – I think the judges are swaying more towards Bec and Jamie (even though I think they’re both awful and should not be there!)

  • Mara

I love Kasey and Karena’s attitudes. Love your work girls! Way to play fair!

  • Tania

This finale is so much better than The Great Food Race (even though the contestants on both show weren’t/aren’t being given a fair go to cook without interruptions). It’s exciting having them go offsite to do the next challenge too.

    • roger

The production values are a lot higher!

  • tAnia

Yay! Finally the hats! Covered heads! #HygieneFirst

    • Deb

But shouldn’t all the hair be pulled back? Bec’s is poking out at the back.

      • roger

It wouldn’t look as good on tv maybe.

  • Tania

Even though they didn’t declare it … do you think maybe Bec and Jamie scored more points because of Bec having worked with an injury?

    • roger

Perhaps the sympathy vote, but it did seem like their food was better.

    • deb

No, I think they’re being strategic … Bec and Jamie win the first round; Kasey and Karena the second round; then the third – oh my goodness, the suspense! Who will win? 😉

  • Deb

These two really annoy me! They CONSTANTLY swear (and are lucky the amount of times they swear don’t affect their scores – maybe they should) and here they are getting antsy because Josh ticked Jamie off for slamming the door, using a swear word in the process. Which Jamie always does! Seriously, she shows no respect and does not deserve to be there.

    • roger

They are coming across as very catty during this challenge, while the other girls just get on with it.

    • S

They annoy me so much! Did you see how Jamie was harping on about how Karena and Kasey are always so positive. So childish!

    • Clint

Yeah, do as I say, not as I do, is obviously how Bec operates
I’d hate to see what Jamie is like in her cafe

  • Georgie

I agree Roger. Harden up Becs and Jamie! If that equipment was hers, she wouldnt treat it like crap!

    • roger

SOOO MUCH WHINING from Bec and Jaimie in this challenge. I just got a sou chef and Josh is helping them. Waa waaa waa. Go have a cry!

  • Deb

I’m finding something interesting – why are these contesants, however many week’s we’re into it, still chopping like civilians? Learning to slice fast, chef-style, should be one of the first things they learn.

    • Tania

It would be good if they were taught techniques like that in the masterclass, for sure (the one they show on Saturday nights). It’s one of the first things I learnt when I worked at Cobb&Co (that, and how to cut carrots into the shape of flowers)

  • Georgie

OMG stop bitching Jamie and Becs! Wa wa wa!!

  • Deb

    Could Ray be any cooler?

    • Clint

I think my missus agrees with you

      • roger

Are you talking to yourself, or are there two Georgies?

  • Tania

It’s going to be interesting to see how they score this one.
I’m sure kitchen staff constantly talking to, challenging, and asking questions, like Jamie did would be a big no-no.
Karena and her sister just got on with it with no dramas, so should score well.

  • !!!!!

Kasey Karena annoy the shit out of me…well the smaller one anyway. At least Jaimie and Bec aren’t sucking up to Josh and backstabbing …”oh how would she feel, I mean its a brand new kitchen” and more or less saying they would have won the 1st challenge if they hadn’t have got more time
well, um your food was undercooked so no idea how that would have worked…

    • roger

      I think they are smart.

  • Tania

Did anyone else feel that Jamie and Bec got more camera time in that previous challenge?

    • roger

Way more. In my recapping, I had way more to write about Jaimie and Bec. It is usually like that. Jaimie and Bec create a lot of drama, which the editors would like. Calm cooking isn’t “interesting”.

  • Tania

All I can think of is – if Jamie and Bec win, all those lovely pots will be smashed up and banged about! 🙁

  • Mara

I’m a bit nervous with the purple team two points ahead 🙁

    • roger

      sammmmmeeee.

  • Deb

I would like to see more of the planning – as in, how the teams decide who is going to do what. We’ve just skipped to them having all the ingredients at the ready; it would have been good to see them go and get everything too.

    • roger

Yea, that is the problem with 3 challenges in one night.

  • Tania

I never realised before how much the judges help them. Telling them what they should have done by now, walking around telling them things … it would be better if they left them to it to flounder, to separate out the real stars from those who just make a lot of noise.

    • roger

With only 3 hours to cook dishes from recipe without having any experience, you can understand why they would give them some tips. Otherwise, there would be no dishes served. I think professional chefs would struggle with some of these challenges with the time constraints.

  • Tania

Far out. What a b**** Jamie is. How dare she speak to a judge like that? She’d be out on her butt if she did that to a head chef.
This show is not doing her business any favours.

    • roger

She should have said THANK YOU. He was helping her!

  • Mara

    Nail biting!!!

    • roger

      Tell me about it!

  • roger

Lets have some predictions! Who is going to win???

    • Tania

I think Bec and Jamie will win by a whisker

      • roger

I sure hope you are wrong 🙁

        • tania

Me too, but I think they’re somone(s)’s little pets

  • Lisa Whyte

    Team Pink better win!

    • roger

      So true!

  • clint

The K sisters have done a better looking dessert

    • Deb

Yep; I like the look of Bec’s and Jamie’s pork dish better though

  • roger

I think the entree and dessert was won by pink, and the main was won by the purple team. Hopefully pink can get 3 points back.

    • Deb

      I concur.
I’m sick of the contestants always going on about how they’ve put their lives on hold, etc., etc., etc., to enter this competition – it’s come with its perks along the way!

      • roger

I agree! Every team made sacrifices to be there. Even if they lose, they can still say they were finalists. It will give Jaimie’s business a boost.

  • roger

    SCORES ARE TIED!

    • roger

      doh, back two points behind.

  • Mara

    Come on pink girls!!!

  • tania

Simon’s gonna rate the blondies one point less

  • tania

The K sisters will get job offers if they don’t win

  • tania

    roger?????

  • Mara

    YAY!!!! Well deserved girls!

  • tania

On behalf of all the lovely new, shiny kitchen appliances and tools, yippeeee! They’re in for a good life, not being bashed about 😉

  • tania

Bad sports – if i was Jamie or Bec I would have hugged the winners and congratulated them

  • tania

Hey, hold up … in the interview in the Herald this morning, Kasey and Karena said they hadn’t told anyone in their family the outcome, yet there they are … lies!

  • Name

I found it ironic that Jamie’s undoing was the very thing that she does for a living – that she should have excelled at. I wonder if Bec blames her for them not winning.

  • madamespeaker

i’d love a GIF of Simon Gault doing the Jaimie & Bec ‘freaky’ dance

  • mjj

mean that the runners up get no prizes?? not even a set of ginsu knives?

    • Tania

No, nothing. Except a check with reality and, in Jamie and Bec’s case, all the warranted negative press and infamy for being so ungracious, rude and hideous contestants.

      • roger

        BOOYAH!

  • madamespeaker

and whatever happened to Chelsea Winter?

    • roger

she has a hugely successful facebook page, over 70 000, and her first cook book is very popular. It has had to be reprinted many times now. She is also writing her second cook book at the moment, and I saw her on TV the other day advertising fish or beef or something like that.

      • K

I was going to say the same. Chelsea seems to have done very well since Masterchef

        • Tania

Personally, I find it annoying that Aaron Brunet is only releasing his cookbook now (well, during this season of the show). He is cashing in on THIS show to promote himself. They did this with Chelsy’s cookbook too – it’s too late, and isn’t fair on this lot of contestants. Considering filming finished late last year, the current contestants should have a cookbook all ready to go – there’s no need to wait a year.

  • dawn uk

Jamie wound me up every show to the point i was pittying bec. So happy the ks put that cocky cow in her place. They were certainly worthy winners and i will buy there cook book and nikki and jordans if they ever bring one out they should of been in the final with the k girls. Great season of masterchef now i can stop throwing things at the tv when that silly bitch would run her mouth.
