Wimbledon to screen on ESPN

espn_logoAnother sporting event has vanished from free-to-air television. Wimbledon, which has been an annual fixture for TVNZ, will screen on ESPN from Monday.

SKY’s diverse sporting content continues to grow with LIVE coverage of Wimbledon to screen on ESPN for the first time this month.

Haydn Arndt, ESPN General Manager for Australia/New Zealand, is thrilled to add LIVE coverage of Wimbledon to ESPN’s schedule.

“ESPN has a rich history with tennis that we will continue to enhance and expand. We are excited to be able to announce that we will be bringing Wimbledon LIVE and exclusively to New Zealand tennis fans, a great addition to our schedule.”

Coverage of Wimbledon starts on Monday 23 June. ESPN’s commentary team includes former tennis players John McEnroe, Chris Evert and Cliff Drysdale.

Wimbledon – the third tennis grand slam of the year – is the oldest tennis tournament in the world. ESPN has LIVE coverage of each day of the prestigious grand slam.

Wimbledon is home on TV ONE! This is awful news….

    • Drew Horan

Sommet Sports should of picked it up.

Wouldn’t it have clashed with the Football World Cup?

It could just be that the return wasn’t worth the investment…

    • Jas

I would say that is the answer. The commercial return would be minimal as advertising revenue would be low and no one really watches until last 3 days.

Sky’s ESPN coverage is terrible. Soooo many repetitious annoying adverts every few minutes. Sky please bring it back to normal sport channels! I use to think TVNZ wimbledon coverage over the years was bad, EPSN makes it even more painful to watch!!!

It wouldn’t have clashed with the FIFA World Cup as Wimbledon games are shown LIVE overnight and if they run past 6am, then TVNZ moved them to U so they don’t run into Breakfast. But with U now closed down, who knows what would have happened after 6am.

ONE does air World cup games overnight so it would have clashed. But, the could have done what they did in 2010 and air Wimbledon on TV2

TVNZ coverage sucked. Little or no replays, only shown in the early hours – some of us have to work. Much prefer Sky. Better coverage. Match of the day. replayed often – French open was awesome. Far prefer to pay for a much better product than have a free vastly inferior one.

Really brassed off that there are no replays of Wimbledon on ESPN – my 90 year old mum is really disappointed she won’t get to see anything of her favourite tennis tournament. She really enjoyed SKY coverage of Roland Garros.
